Title: GIOVANNI DEMIO e la maniera moderna : Tra Tiziano e Tintoretto
Author: Sgarbi, Vittorio (ed)
Price: $41.97    Original Price: $59.95
ISBN: 9788894313345
Record created on 11/24/2018
Description: Schio: Casa editrice Contemplazioni, 2018. 30cm., hardcover., 165pp. prof. illus. Exhibition held at Palazzo Fogazzaro, Schio.

Summary: The majestic cycle of fifteen canvases completing the decoration of Santa Maria in Vallicella was unveiled just prior to the 1700 Jubilee. This church is now owned by the Fondo Edifici di Culto, which safeguards, conserves and promotes more than 820 religious structures across Italy. Lining the path toward St Peter's Basilica, its paintings continue to present the world with the precious message of Human Redemption. This book retraces the history, importance and exceptional beauty of this largely unknown cycle. More importantly it brings attention to the need for its restoration that, now as 320 years ago, requires the support of one or more patrons, inspired by a passion for this story.

Contents: The cycle of Human Redemption - a comprehensive overview ; The Chiesa Nuova before the 1675 Jubilee ; The decoration of the Chiesa Nuova during the last quarter of the seventeenth century ; A study of the use of materials, methods of realization and requirements for the restoration of the cycle of Human Redemption.

Title: Florentiner Malerei – Alte Pinakothek : Die Gemälde des 14. bis 16. Jahrhunderts
Author: Hojer, Annette (et al)
Price: $66.50    Original Price: $95.00
ISBN: 9783422074132

Description: München: Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2017. 29cm., hardcover, 744pp., 750 color illus. German text.

Summary: The catalogue of Florentine paintings in the Alte Pinakothek covers one of the internationally most important collections of paintings at the centre of the Renaissance. Some 80 works, including panels by Giotto, Fra Angelico, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Filippo Lippi, Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea del Sarto, have been thoroughly examined, art historically and technologically, for the first time. The written contributions present new findings on the attribution, provenance, iconography and the history of the genre and function. Analyses of materials and painting techniques explore the artists' working methods and enable a better understanding of correlations that led to a change of technique and style. Four introductory essays focus on the specific characteristics of Florentine painting seen in the light of current research on the art of the early modern era in Italy. The opulent inventory catalogue presents the results of an interdisciplinary research project at the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the Doerner Institut that was generously sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation.

Summary: Synagogues are complex, highly significant and polyvalent spaces of religious, social, economic, architectural, and artistic developments in Jewish culture. At the same time, they reveal the interdependencies on the surrounding cultures. Ever since the Shoah, historic synagogues especially in Europe have gained high importance as focal points of remembrance and education. This volume presents selected papers of the 3rd International Congress on Jewish architecture “Synagogue and Museum.” The conference at the Technische Universität Braunschweig focused on examining the worldwide phenomenon of synagogues in and as museums within an interdisciplinary perspective. The papers discuss theoretical and historical approaches as well as practical examples from Austria, Brazil, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Poland, Russia and the USA.

Description: Crocetta del Montello: Antiga, 2018. 29cm., pbk., 336pp., 250 illus. Exhibition held at Museo del Settecento Veneziano, Ca' Rezzonico, Venezia. Italian text.

Summary: Anton Maria Zanetti (1679-1767) was a central figure in the eighteenth-century history of Venetian collecting and in the world’s endorsement of Venetian art. An art patron and influential intermediary on behalf of nobles and sovereigns, commissioning and purchasing works by Venice’s most famous artists, Zanetti was perhaps the most influential character in the Venetian art scene of the time. Known as “il Vecchio”, or “di Girolamo”, to distinguish him from his namesake younger cousin who was a famous librarian at the Marciana Library in Venice, Zanetti was not only a passionate collector but also a talented draughtsman and skilled engraver. After his father’s death in 1711, he was forced to provide for the rest of the family as an insurance agent, but despite difficulties, this did not prevent him from following his own inclinations. A friend to artists such as Canaletto, Rosalba Carriera, Sebastiano and Marco Ricci and Giambattista Tiepolo, Zanetti was in close contact with the most important European collectors.

He himself assembled an extraordinary collection of antique gems, drawings and prints that was dispersed after his death. He also promoted splendid publishing initiatives, most notably two volumes on ancient sculpture, now conserved in the vestibule of the Marciana Library and one of the most beautiful and luxurious illustrated publications of the entire eighteenth century. An inexhaustible collection of letters, now spread among libraries and private collectors, documents his dense network of relationships and friendships and offers a rare insight into the cultural life of the period. To commemorate this extraordinary figure, the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia is dedicating him an exhibition that highlights his activities as an artist and patron. Testimonies from his life in the form of books, letters, engravings and drawings, none of which are usually exhibited for conservation reasons, will be shown together with art from his collection, including works by Tiepolo, Sebastiano and Marco Ricci, Palma il Giovane and others, now preserved in the city’s museums, among these the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia, the Giorgio Cini Foundation, the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana and Venice’s civic museums, as well as in several private collections.
