Title: Splendour of the Burgundian Netherlands – Southern Netherlandish illuminated manuscripts in Dutch collections
Author: As-Vijvers, Anne Margreet W. ; Anne S. Korteweg
Price: $24.98    Original Price: $49.95
ISBN: 9789462582637
Record created on 01/09/18
Description: Zwolle: W Books, 2018. 29cm., pbk., 384pp., ca. 240 color illus. Exhibition held at Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht. English edition.

Summary: This book presents a survey of ninety of the finest and most interesting medieval manuscripts produced in the southern Netherlands - present-day Belgium - which ended up in Dutch public collections at various points in time. This largely unknown cultural heritage is displayed here in a vast panoramic context ranging from the tenth to the mid-sixteenth century. The painted scenes in these handwritten books are not only of a high artistic quality, but also present a richly-textured picture of medieval life. The emphasis is on the role of books in the society of the Middle Ages: they served as expressions of sumptuousness on the part of the aristocracy, as richly-decorated books for church services, and as cherished objects used by affluent burghers for their private devotion. The authors also devote attention to the large-size, superbly-illustrated works of history and literature that were produced under the patronage of the dukes of Burgundy. Other subjects include the Order of the Golden Fleece, the artistic ties between the northern and southern Netherlands, pilgrim badges, and the transition from manuscripts to printed books. The book contains twenty-four chapters, each one consisting of an introduction to the art-historical and cultural-historical context, followed by discussions of individual manuscripts. These chapters were written by fifteen international specialists in the field of medieval manuscripts and book illumination of the southern Netherlands. In addition, the book contains an introduction on the ways in which these manuscripts ended up in the Netherlands, a technical analysis of a number of manuscripts, and a map accompanied by an account of the rise and unification of the southern Netherlands. At the back of the book, readers will find detailed descriptions of the manuscripts. The entire publication is lavishly illustrated, with some 250 magnificent colour reproductions.

Author: Vannugli, Antonio
Price: $22.50    Original Price: $45.00
ISBN: 9788849235166
Record created on 12/01/17
Description: Roma: Gangemi, 2017. 24cm., pbk., 208pp. illus.

Title: Architect, Patron and Craftsman in Tudor and Early Stuart England
Author: Barnwell, P.S. ; Paula Henderson (eds)
Price: $36.25    Original Price: $72.50
ISBN: 9781907730627
Record created on 11/27/17
Description: Donington: Shaun Tyas, 2017. 25cm., hardcover, 208pp. illus., most in color.

Summary: This book contains the papers from a weekend conference held at Rewley House in Oxford in 2016 in honour of Professor Malcolm Airs who taught there from 1975 to 2006, and whose scholarship has centred on the domestic architecture of the Tudor and Stuart period, particularly on building processes and craftsmen. It was a period in which Gothic elements continued to be used, but mixed with details inspired by a Classical antiquity. This was the English Renaissance, but the systematic study of Classical models and the publication of handbooks of Classical architecture, and the profession of architecture, were all in their infancy. The blend of styles is unique to England; while it used to be dismissed as backward it is today celebrated for its inventiveness and pioneering achievements. In these papers Professor Airs’ friends and colleagues pay tribute to his scholarship in a series of essays on topics which have interested him. They include the reception and appreciation of the architecture of the Tudor and Early Stuart period, studies of the sources of inspiration for individual house designs, using both written and architectural evidence, the setting of houses, planning, fixtures and decoration.

Contents: William Whyte, The Might-Have-Beens of Architectural History: Meritocracy, Conservation, and the Career of Malcolm Airs [with an appendix bibliography of Malcolm Airs' writings] ; Nicholas Cooper, The Tudor and Jacobean Great House, 1650 to 1950: Architectural History and the History of Architecture ; Pete Smith, Wollaton Hall and New Hardwick Hall ; David Adshead, Long-Lost Cousins or False Friends? The Staircase Halls at Doddington Hall, Lincolnshire, and Ham House, Surrey ; Paula Henderson, Splendid Houses: Elite Living in Tudor and Early Stuart London ; Sally Jeffrey, Cloisters and Terraces in the Garden: Their Origin and Use in Jacobean England ; Geoffrey Tyack, The Schools Quadrangle at Oxford: Function and Rhetoric ; Maurice Howard, Finishing the Building in Early Modern England: Panelling, Furnishing and the Technology of Painting ; Claire Gapper, Patrons, Plasterers and Architects: Designing Decorative Plasterwork in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries ; Kathryn Davies, Visual Communication in Early Modern Buildings ; Mark Girouard, Aspects of a Biographical Dictionary of Architecture. Title: Places of Worship in Britain and Ireland, 1150-1350
Author: Barnwell, Paul S. (ed)
Price: $40.00    Original Price: $80.00
ISBN: 9781907730672
Record created on 06/25/18
Description: Donington: Shaun Tyas, 2018. 25cm., hardcover, 272pp., 64 color, 31 b&w illus.

Summary: This is the third in a chronological series of volumes based on weekend conferences at Rewley House in Oxford, concerning places of worship in Britain and Ireland from the late Roman period to the present. The period covered in this volume saw the rise of the great cathedrals, the spread of reformed monasticism (including nunneries), the coming of the friars and the spread of the parish system into every corner of Britain and Ireland. Architecturally, the emergence and spread of the Gothic style is of special significance, but as important was the evolution of church plans and form to accommodate new forms of worship driven by developments in theology and liturgy. The emphasis here is on the main types of institution and particularly those for which good physical evidence survives. Cathedrals, monasteries of several orders, nunneries, friaries and parish churches are all represented. The spread of Christian values throughout society and the creation of the universal church of the middle ages, binding Britain and Ireland to the whole of Christendom in a uniform culture, are also common themes. The 12 essays are by Philippa Turner (introduction and images), John Harper (on ritual and music), Richard Halsey (on cathedral extensions), Cathy Oakes (on the Benedictines), Glyn Coppack (on the Cistercians), Richard Oram (the Premonstratensians in Scotland), Deirdre O’Sullivan (friaries), Tracy Collins (Irish nunneries), P. S. Barnwell (English parish churches and the conclusion), and Richard Fawcett (on Scottish parish churches). (Rewley House Studies in the Historic Environment, 7)

Title: Buildings of Medieval Europe: Studies in Social and Landscape Contexts of Medieval Buildings
Author: Berryman, Duncan ; Sarah Kerr (eds)
Price: $27.50    Original Price: $55.00
ISBN: 9781785709715
Record created on 03/12/18
Description: London: Oxbow Books, 2018. 25cm., pbk., 160pp., 72 b&w illus.

Summary: This volume brings together an interesting range of papers discussing medieval buildings across Europe. They provide interesting insights to life in the medieval world in several understudied areas of Europe. The papers range from Croatia and Transylvania in the east, Scandinavia in the north and Britain in the west, providing insights into areas that are rarely discussed by books published in western Europe. There is comprehensive range in size and status of buildings, from the smallest, single-roomed house in Byzantine Serbia and rural homes in central Europe to churches in Sweden and monastic hospitals in England. Buildings of high status and low status are discussed, as well as those of a secular and ecclesiastic nature. Materials and craftspeople are considered through a study of brick makers and their identifying marks. This volume aims to open discussions about medieval buildings beyond simply architectural features and typologies, and furthers the discipline through this process. Buildings can reveal details of the lives of their occupants and therefore enrich our knowledge of life in medieval Europe.

Contents: 1. Introduction - Duncan Berryman & Sarah Kerr. 2. Finnish medieval brickmakers' marks as markers of identity - Ilari Aalto. 3. To weigh and to tax - the Medieval and Early Post-medieval administration buildings of Gammel Strand, Copenhagen, Denmark - Stuart Whatley. 4. Medieval roof trusses in the Swedish landscape of Va?stergotland - Robin Gullbrandsson. 5. The medieval hospitals of England - a complex issue - Martin Huggon. 6. Sherds, Walls and the City - Archaeological examination of a modest early Byzantine household - Miriam Steinborn. 7. Medieval churches in a borderland - the case of Transylvania - Daniela Marcu Istrate . 8. Petrapilosa - Building and historical development of medieval fort - Josip Vodmkov. 9. Title: Church Monuments in South Wales, c.1200-1547
Author: Biebrach, Rhianydd
Price: $49.50    Original Price: $99.00
ISBN: 9781783272648
Record created on 07/22/17
Description: Woodbridge: Boydell Press, 2017. 24cm., hardcover, 211pp., 4 color, 48 b&w illus.

Summary: South Wales is an area blessed with an eclectic, but largely unknown, monumental heritage, ranging from plain cross slabs to richly carved effigial monuments on canopied tomb-chests. As a group, these monuments closely reflect the turbulent history of the southern march of Wales, its close links to the West Country and its differences from the 'native Wales' of the north-west. As individuals, they offer fascinating insights into the spiritual and secular concerns of the area's culturally diverse elites. Church Monuments in South Wales is the first full-scale study of the medieval funerary monuments of this region offering a much-needed Celtic contribution to the growing corpus of literature on the monumental culture of late-medieval Europe, which for the British Isles has been hitherto dominated by English studies. It focuses on the social groups who commissioned and were commemorated by funerary monuments and how this distinctive memorial culture reflected their shifting fortunes, tastes and pre-occupations at a time of great social change. Rhianydd Biebrach has taught medieval history at the universities of Swansea, Cardiff and South Wales and edited the journal Church Monuments. She currently works for Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales. (Boydell Studies in Medieval Art and Architecture)

Title: ALBERT BIERSTADT : Witness to a Changing West
Author: Hassrick, Peter H
Price: $30.00    Original Price: $60.00
ISBN: 9780806160047
Record created on 12/11/17
Description: Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 248pp., 173 color illus.

Summary: As one of America’s most prominent nineteenth-century painters, Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902) is justly renowned for his majestic paintings of the western landscape. Yet Bierstadt was also a painter of history, and his figurative works, replete with images of Plains Indians and the American bison, are an important part of his legacy as well. This splendid full-color volume highlights his achievements in chronicling a rapidly changing American West. Born in Germany, Bierstadt rose to prominence as an American artist in the late 1850s and enjoyed decades of critical success. His paintings propelled him to the forefront of the American art scene, but they also met with reproach from his peers and critics in the press who viewed his painting style as outmoded. Bierstadt’s star would rise again, however, when modern art historians began to reconsider his complex oeuvre. This volume takes a major step in reappraising Bierstadt’s contributions by reexamining the artist through a new lens. It shows how Bierstadt conveyed moral messages through his paintings, striving to preserve the dignity of Native peoples and call attention to the tragic slaughter of the American bison. More broadly, the book reconsiders the artist’s engagement with contemporary political and social debates surrounding wildlife conservation in America, the creation and perpetuation of national parks, and the prospects for the West’s indigenous peoples. Bierstadt’s final history paintings, especially his dual masterworks titled The Last of the Buffalo—a special focus of this volume—stand out as elegiac odes to an earlier era, giving voice to concerns about the intertwined fates of Native peoples and endangered wildlife in the West. Along with its rich sampling of Bierstadt’s diverse artwork, Albert Bierstadt: Witness to a Changing West features informative essays by noted curators, scholars of art history, and historians of the American West. Title: Romanticism in the North : From Friedrich to Turner
Author: Blühm, Andres ; Werner Busch (et al)
Price: $18.75    Original Price: $37.50
ISBN: 9789462582415
Record created on 12/21/17
Description: Zwolle: W Books, 2017. 30cm., hardcover, 224pp., 145 color illus. Exhibition held at Groninger Museum. English text.

Summary: During the Romantic Era landscape painting reached its height of popularity through artists such as J.M.W. Turner in Great Britain, Caspar David Friedrich in Germany and Johan Christian Dahl in Norway. Whilst to this day their paintings continue to fascinate our imagination, a whole new artistic vision emerged during this era which would prove to have a determining influence on modern art. It was then that painters – apart from carefully observing their natural environment – also started to look within, focusing on the inner self. Wild seas and volcanic eruptions; quiet moonlit nights and serene meadows. Landscapes can have both an historic dimension and feature traces of national history, as well as prompt a more religious, spiritual experience. In its varied manifestations landscape art remains an important genre within the visual arts. The influence of Romanticism is unmistakably omnipresent in our modern world. The movement, which included the arts as well as intellectual thought, swept through Europe from the late eighteenth century onwards. Romanticism in the North offers a broad overview of landscape painting from that epoch-making period. For the first time the Scandinavian and Dutch varieties of Romanticism are also placed within an international context to ask: how do these lesser known but highly gifted landscape artists relate to their more celebrated contemporaries?

Contents: Werner Busch, Northern Romantic Landscape Painting - An Introduction to its Problems ; David Jackson, Nordic Romantic Landscape - a Double Helix ; Jenny Reynaerts, Beyond Borders. Dutch Romantic Landscape Painting in a European Context ; Catalogue.

Author: Branchetti, Maria Grazia
Price: $16.25    Original Price: $32.50

Summary: Alt-St.

Price: $50.50    Original Price: $101.00
ISBN: 9782503577425

Description: Turnhout: Brepols, 2017. 26cm., pbk., 213pp. illus.

Summary: The volume offers new insights into the nature of medieval culture in towns of western Europe c.1150-1550; and into how the spatiality, hybridity and fluid nature of urban environments defines what made urban culture ‘urban’. This volume explores the specificity of the urban culture in western Europe during the period c. 1150-1550. Since the mid-twentieth century, many studies have complicated the association, traditionally made, between the medieval growth of towns and the birth of a modern, secular world; but few have given any attention to what actually made urban culture ‘urban’. This volume begins by placing medieval ‘urban culture’ within its spatial context, to consider how urban conditions determined the perception and representation of the city-dweller. Contributors examine a variety of urban cultures, from the political to the artistic, from London and Bruges to Florence and Venice, and beyond Europe. They show how urban culture involved a process of interaction with other discourses (royal, noble, ecclesiastical) and that it was not monolithic: the relationship between urban environments and the cultures they generated were hybrid, fluid and dynamic.

Contents: 1. Andrew Brown and Jan Dumolyn, Conceptual and Historiographical Problems of Medieval Urban Culture . 2. Claire Judde de Larivière, The Urban Culture of the Ordinary People. Space and Identity in Renaissance Venice (15th-16th Centuries). 3. Mark Amsler, Memory, Text and Space in Late Medieval London. 4. Description: Wien: Holzhausen, 2017. 28cm., hardcover, 376pp., 56pp. color illus.

Title: The Bar Books: Manuscripts Illuminated for Renaud de Bar, Bishop of Metz (1303-1316)
Author: Davenport, Kay
Price: $62.50    Original Price: $125.00
ISBN: 9782503574677

Description: Turnhout: Brepols, 2017. 28cm., hardcover, 728pp., 45 color, 254 b&w illus.

Summary: This study gives an overview of the man and his books, paying special attention to the heraldry, the calendars, and the marginalia in three appendices. Renaud de Bar (d. 1316) was the sixty-ninth bishop of Metz, and the fourth son of the powerful count of Bar. The house of Bar had a distinguished lineage intertwined with most of the important European houses, and Renaud’s eldest brother married the eldest daughter of the king of England. In the last century, as manuscripts were identified and attributed, realisation has gradually dawned that he commissioned six de luxe manuscripts for his particular use in the course of his rapid rise to the episcopacy. The heraldry of his Breviary in two volumes is unique, astonishing in a church book, as it contains about 180 non-Bar shields of arms in two-line initials, in addition to about 225 shields of Bar and Toucy, belonging to his immediate family, and his own personal shield which in the course of the book is scrupulously modified to reflect his elevation to the chair at Metz. This detailed study gives a novel overview of the man and his books, paying special attention to the heraldry, the calendars, and the marginalia in three appendices. (Manuscripta Illuminata, 2)

Title: Selling Andrew Jackson : RALPH E.W. EARL and the Politics of Portraiture
Author: Stephens, Rachel
Price: $19.98    Original Price: $39.95

Record created on 12/17/17
Description: Columbia: The University of South Carolina Press, 2018. 26cm., hardcover, 256pp., 10 color, 56 b&w illus.

Summary: Selling Andrew Jackson is the first book-length study of the American portrait painter Ralph E. W. Earl, who worked as Andrew Jackson’s personal artist from 1817 until Earl’s death in 1838. During this period Jackson held Earl in close council, even providing him residence at the Hermitage, Jackson’s home in Tennessee, and at the White House during his presidency. In this well-researched and comprehensive volume, Rachel Stephens examines Earl’s role in Jackson’s inner circle and the influence of his portraits on Jackson’s political career and historical legacy. By investigating the role that visual culture played in early American history, Stephens reveals the fascinating connections between politics and portraiture in order to challenge existing frameworks for grasping the inner workings of early nineteenth-century politics. Stephens argues that understanding the role Earl played within Jackson’s coterie is critical to understanding the trajectory of Jackson’s career. Earl, she concludes, should be credited with playing the propagandistic role of image-shaper—long before such a position existed within American presidential politics. Earl’s portraits became fine art icons that changed in character and context as Jackson matured from the hero of the Battle of New Orleans to the first common-man president to the leader of the Democratic party, and finally to the rustic sage of the Hermitage. Jackson and Earl worked as a team to exploit an emerging political culture that sought pictures of famous people to complement the nation’s exploding mass culture, grounded on printing, fast communications, and technological innovation. To further this cause, Earl operated a printmaking enterprise and used his portrait images to create engravings and lithographs to spread Jackson’s influence into homes and businesses. Portraits became vehicles to portray political allegiances, middle-class cultural aspirations, and the conspicuous trappings of wealth and power. Through a comprehensive analysis of primary sources including those detailing Jackson’s politics, contemporary political cartoons and caricatures, portraits and prints, and the social and economic history of the period, Stephens illuminates the man they pictured in new ways, seeking to broaden the understanding of such a complicated figure in American history.

Title: Fashioned Texts and Painted Books : Nineteenth-Century French Fan Poetry
Author: Edgington, Erin E
Price: $32.50    Original Price: $65.00
ISBN: 9781469635774
Record created on 01/31/18
Description: Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2017. 24cm., hardcover, 212pp.

Summary: Fashioned Texts and Painted Books examines the folding fan’s multiple roles in fin-de-siècle and early twentieth-century French literature. Focusing on the fan’s identity as a symbol of feminine sexuality, as a collectible art object, and, especially, as an alternative book form well suited to the reception of poetic texts, the study highlights the fan’s suitability as a substrate for verse, deriving from its myriad associations with coquetry and sex, flight, air, and breath. Close readings of Stéphane Mallarmé’s éventails of the 1880s and 1890s and Paul Claudel’s Cent phrases pour éventails (1927) consider both text and paratext as they underscore the significant visual interest of this poetry. Works in prose and in verse by Octave Uzanne, Guy de Maupassant, and Marcel Proust, along with fan leaves by Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, and Paul Gauguin, serve as points of comparison that deepen our understanding of the complex interplay of text and image that characterizes this occasional subgenre. Through its interrogation of the correspondences between form and content in fan poetry, this study demonstrates that the fan was, in addition to being a ubiquitous fashion accessory, a significant literary and art historical object straddling the boundary between East and West, past and present, and high and low art. Title: Die Textilen Geschenke Papst Bonifaz’ VIII.
Author: Elster, Christiane
Price: $70.00    Original Price: $140.00

Record created on 12/13/17
Description: Petersberg: Imhof, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 464pp., 309 color illus.

Summary: Die Päpste des Mittelalters verschenkten häufig kostbare liturgische Textilien an geistliche Institutionen innerhalb und außerhalb Roms. Author: Fidanza, Giovan Battista

Record created on 12/08/16
Description: St. Bonaventure: Franciscan Institute Publications, 2016. 28cm., hardcover, 248pp. illus.

Summary: The Irish Franciscan friar, Luke Wadding (Waterford, 1588 - Rome,1657), was a very significant figure for his time. Aged fifteen, he left Ireland for Portugal never to return. In 1618 he moved to Rome as part of a Spanish diplomatic mission to ask the Holy See to recognize the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, remaining there for the rest of his life. Primarily, Wadding is famous for his highly important contribution to Franciscan history, having written the first eight volumes of Annales Minorum, the great work devoted to the history of the three Franciscan orders. As an accomplished theologian, he also played a prominent role in the ecclesiastical politics of Rome in the 1600s. This book deals with Wadding’s artistic involvement in commissioning works of art and architecture, chiefly for ‘his’ Church of St. Isidore in Rome; his portraits – both painted and engraved – are also investigated. By choosing such important artists as Andrea Sacchi and Carlo Maratti, he was showcasing the Church of St. Isidore as a significant example of art and architecture in seventeenth-century Rome. Most of this research has been carried out from unpublished documents kept in Roman archives.

Description: Woodbridge: Boydell Press, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 313pp., 15 color illus.

Summary: Pietro Monte's Collectanea is a wide-ranging treatise on the arts of knighthood, focusing on martial arts, athletics, arms and armour, and military practice, but touching on subjects as diverse as diet, zoology and the design of life preservers. Monte, a courtier, soldier and scholar who won the respect of men like Leonardo da Vinci and Baldesar Castiglione, wrote the work in Spanish in the late 1400s, and later produced an expanded Latin translation. The Latin version, published in Milan in 1509, forms the basis of this translation. Monte describes the techniques of personal combat with various weapons, including the two-handed and one-handed sword, pollaxe, and dagger, as well as wrestling, armored and mounted combat. He also documents the athletic activities used by knights to hone their physical abilities: running, jumping, throwing, and vaulting. Finally, the Collectanea is the sole medieval text to provide extensive discussion of the design of arms and armour. This translation includes an illustrated introduction to Monte and his technical subject-matter, as well as a translation of Book 5 of Monte's De Dignoscendis Hominibus (1492), which overlaps much of the technical content of the Collectanea. The renowned Belgian landscape designer Erik Dhont reinterpreted and subtly redesigned the gardens and surrounding grounds, completed by a palindrome-like labyrinth designed by Swiss artist Markus Raetz. This new book tells the full story of the La Gara estate and illustrate its beauty. The essays by Anette Freytag, Verena Best, Eric Dumont, Leïla el-Wakil, Anette Freytag, Iris Lauterbach, Gaël Maridat & Christian Meisser, Rainer Michael Mason, Luc-Eric Revilliod, and Natalie Rilliet investigate various aspects of its preservation and restoration of buildings and gardens and the contemporary interventions. They highlight features such as the historic watering system for the gardens and the included fishponds and look at the specific Genevan garden tradition and characteristics of the rural landscape around Jussy with its biodiversity. Moreover, they contextualize La Gara with the “ferme ornée”, a villa with agricultural and ornamental features following ancient Roman models. The beautifully designed volume is rounded out with newly commissioned photographs by renowned Swiss photographer Georg Aerni.

Summary: Rueland Frueauf the Elder, documented in Salzburg and Passau between 1470 and 1507, is one of the most significant Late Gothic painters in the German speaking area. His major work consists of eight large altar panels painted around 1490/91 for a Salzburg church. Besides the oeuvre of Frueauf the Elder, which is owned by the Belvedere almost in its entirety, the show will include selected works by artists from Frueauf's circle, such as by the Master of Grossgmain, and, thanks to a generous loan from Klosterneuburg Monastery, the work of Frueauf's son, Rueland Frueauf the Younger. What will be the first juxtaposition of the father's output with that of Frueauf the Younger will allow for an in-depth comparison of the two painters. The exhibition will provide impetus with a view to tackling numerous unsolved problems related to the Frueauf circle. Additional insight will also be supplied by art technological analysis that has been carried out in the course of the restoration of the Salzburg altar panels. Further works of the Frueauf group still await examination.
