Title: Stick to the Skin : African American and Black British Art, 1965-2015
Author: Bernierr, Celeste-Marie
Price: $85.00
ISBN: 9780520286535
Record created on 04/05/18
Description: Berkeley: University of California Press, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 344pp., 99 color illus.

Summary: The first comparative history of African American and Black British artists, artworks, and art movements, Stick to the Skin traces the lives and works of over fifty twentieth- and twenty-first-century painters, photographers, sculptors, and mixed-media assemblage, installation, video, and performance artists. Working in the United States and Britain from 1965 to 2015, the African diasporic artists featured in this book cut to the heart of hidden histories, untold narratives, and missing memories to tell stories that “stick to the skin” and arrive at a new “Black lexicon of liberation.” Informed by extensive research and invaluable oral testimonies from the artists themselves, Celeste-Marie Bernier's writing sheds light on African American and Black British art-making traditions and presents an extremely important intervention not only into European histories of modern and contemporary art and visual culture but also into debates within African American studies, African diasporic studies, and Black British studies. This remarkable text forcibly asserts the originality and importance of Black artists’ work over this period, and underscores the need to understand Black art as a distinctive category of cultural production. Among the artists included are Benny Andrews, Bessie Harvey, Lubaina Himid, Claudette Johnson, Noah Purifoy, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, Joyce J. Scott, Maud Sulter, and Barbara Walker. Title: Florentiner Malerei – Alte Pinakothek : Die Gemälde des 14. bis 16. Jahrhunderts
Author: Hojer, Annette (et al)
Price: $66.50    Original Price: $95.00
ISBN: 9783422074132
Record created on 07/03/17
Description: München: Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2017. 29cm., hardcover, 744pp., 750 color illus. German text.

Summary: The catalogue of Florentine paintings in the Alte Pinakothek covers one of the internationally most important collections of paintings at the centre of the Renaissance. Some 80 works, including panels by Giotto, Fra Angelico, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Filippo Lippi, Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea del Sarto, have been thoroughly examined, art historically and technologically, for the first time. The written contributions present new findings on the attribution, provenance, iconography and the history of the genre and function. Analyses of materials and painting techniques explore the artists' working methods and enable a better understanding of correlations that led to a change of technique and style. Four introductory essays focus on the specific characteristics of Florentine painting seen in the light of current research on the art of the early modern era in Italy. The opulent inventory catalogue presents the results of an interdisciplinary research project at the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the Doerner Institut that was generously sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation.

Title: CHANTAL JOFFE : Personal Feeling Is the Main Thing
Author: Joffe, Chantal ; Dorothy Price ; Gemma Blackshaw
Price: $50.00
ISBN: 9781786273673
Record created on 08/01/18
Description: London: Laurence King, 2018. 29cm., hardcover, 176pp. illus.

Summary: Personal Feeling Is the Main Thing sees the acclaimed British artist Chantal Joffe setting out on a journey with art historian Dorothy Price in the footsteps of the pioneering German painter Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876 – 1907), the first female artist to paint a naked self-portrait. Returning to London, Joffe undertakes new paintings of her friends, the novelist and writer Olivia Laing and art historian Gemma Blackshaw, heavily pregnant. Richly illustrated with works from throughout Joffe’s career – depicting her daughter Esme, friends, artists and writers – alongside works by Modersohn-Becker and Polaroids by Joffe of the artist’s home in Worpswede, this book offers a rare window into Joffe’s practice through the prism of Modersohn-Becker, working a century earlier. Revealing texts by Dorothy Price, Gemma Blackshaw and Olivia Laing further illuminate the integrity, as well as the psychological and emotional force Joffe brings to figurative painting. ‘Though separated in time and place, Modersohn-Becker’s intensity of vision still speaks directly to Chantal Joffe; both artists are invested in an unflinching approach to their subject matter. They are at once fierce and tender in their acuity.’ – Dorothy Price.

Title: The Socialist Life of Modern Architecture, Bucharest, 1947-1965
Author: Maxim, Juliana
Price: $140.00
ISBN: 9781138820340
Record created on 01/14/18
Description: London: Routledge, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 188pp., 70 illus.

Summary: The Socialist Life of Modern Architecture is the first systematic architectural history of Romania under socialism written in English. It examines the mechanisms through which modern architecture was invested with political meaning and, in reverse, how specific architectural solutions came to define the socialist experience. Each of the book's three parts traces the historical development of one key aspect of Romania's architectural culture between the years 1949-1964: the planning and construction of housing districts in Bucharest - the role of typification of design and standardization of construction in a project of cultural transformation - the production and management of a folk architectural tradition. Going beyond buildings and architects to consider the use of photography, painting, and novels, as well as narrations of history and the formation of an ethnographic architectural heritage, the author explores how buildings came to participate in the cultural imagination of socialism-and became, in fact, a privileged medium of socialism. Part of the growing interest in the significance of Soviet Bloc architecture, this is an important contribution to the fields of architectural history, cultural history, and visual culture.

Who was the sitter? What was her relationship to Mondrian? The mysterious wanderings of an impressive drawing have now been reconstructed in an intimate exhibition and intriguing book. Why did people think that Gestel made the drawing? How was it discovered that Mondrian was the artist? Who is the sitter? How did the artist and the sitter come to be forgotten? Title: Siena and the Angevins, 1300-1350 : Art, Diplomacy, and Dynastic Ambition
Author: Norman, Diana
Price: $163.00
ISBN: 9782503574363
Record created on 10/03/17
Description: Turnhout: Brepols, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 272pp., 50 color, 55 b&w illus.

Summary: Based on extensive new research, this book explores the distinctive political and diplomatic relationship between the late medieval city of Siena and the Angevin royal family of Naples and the ways in which this relationship impacted upon the production and dissemination of Sienese art during the first half of the fourteenth century. Between 1289 and 1327 Siena witnessed a series of lavish ceremonial events marking the visits to the city of successive Angevin kings and princes, members of the French dynasty that ruled the whole of southern Italy. The reason for these magnificent civic rituals was Siena’s status as a Guelph city state closely allied both to the papacy and to the kingdom of Naples. Based on extensive new research, including unpublished archival material, Diana Norman explores in detail the nature and extent of this distinctive political and diplomatic relationship and the ways in which it impacted upon the production and dissemination of Sienese art during the first half of the fourteenth century. In so doing, she demonstrates that this relationship not only informed the conception and resolution of a number of major pictorial schemes for key civic sites in Siena itself, but that it also familiarised the Angevin royal family with the quality of contemporary Sienese art. This, in turn, led to the employment of Sienese artists by the Angevins and to the production of significant images that commemorated various members of the dynasty. In this beautifully illustrated book, works of art executed by well-known fourteenth-century artists - including Simone Martini, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, and Tino di Camaino - are examined in a new light, together with other finely crafted objects produced by lesser known artists, all whom contributed to this hitherto over-looked example of late medieval cultural exchange. Title: Photographing Tutankhamun : Archaeology, Ancient Egypt, and the Archive
Author: Riggs, Christina
Price: $108.00
ISBN: 9781350038523
Record created on 01/03/18
Description: London-New York: Bloomsbury, 2018. 25cm., hardcover, 256pp., 75 b&w illus.

Summary: They are among the most famous and compelling photographs ever made in archaeology: Howard Carter kneeling before the burial shrines of Tutankhamun; life-size statues of the boy king on guard beside a doorway, tantalizingly sealed, in his tomb; or a solid gold coffin still draped with flowers cut more than 3,300 years ago. Yet until now, no study has explored the ways in which photography helped mythologize the tomb of Tutankhamun, nor the role photography played in shaping archaeological methods and interpretations, both in and beyond the field. This book undertakes the first critical analysis of the photographic archive formed during the ten-year clearance of the tomb, and in doing so explores the interface between photography and archaeology at a pivotal time for both. Photographing Tutankhamun foregrounds photography as a material, technical, and social process in early 20th-century archaeology, in order to question how the photograph made and remade 'ancient Egypt' in the waning age of colonial order.

Contents: Chapter 1. King Tut and the Camera: An Introduction. Chapter 2. Mirrored Memories: Excavating the Photographic Archive. Chapter 3. 'The first and most pressing need': Photographic Practice at the Tomb of Tutankhamun. Chapter 4. Tutankhamun's Treasures: Objects, Artworks, Bodies. Chapter 5. Men at Work: The Resurrection of the Boy-king. Chapter 6. Worlds Exclusive: Mediating Tutankhamun. Chapter 7. After Images.

Title: RUBENS : des camées antiques à la galerie Medicis
Author: Cojannot-Le Blanc, Marianne ; Evelyne Prioux
Price: $65.00
ISBN: 9782847423891
Record created on 11/30/18
Description: Paris: Editions Le Passage, 2018. 29cm., hardcover, 276pp. , 190 illus., most in color.

Title: Albtraumhaft Schön: RUBENS’ Wiener Medusenhaupt trifft auf die Brünner Fassung
Author: Gruber, Gerlinde ; Petr Tomasek
Price: $10.95
ISBN: 9783990201855
Record created on 11/27/18
Description: Wien: Kunsthistorisches Museum, 2018. 25cm., pbk., 36pp. illus.

Author: Vellodi, Kamini
Price: $114.00
ISBN: 9781350083073
Record created on 06/24/18
Description: London: Bloomsbury, 2019. 25cm., hardcover, 214pp., 60 color illus.

Summary: Addressing the philosophical problem of 'difference' in art history, Tintoretto's Difference offers a new reading of this pioneering 16th century painter, drawing upon the work of the 20th century philosopher Gilles Deleuze. With a focus on Deleuze's important concept of the diagram, Tintoretto's Difference invests the artist's practice in a critical study of art history's methods, concepts and modes of thought, and some of the fundamental dimensions of its scholarly practice: context, tradition, influence, and fact. Bringing together philosophical, art historical, art theoretical and art historiographical analysis, this book investigates the potentials of the diagrammatic for art historical thinking across the registers of semiotics, aesthetics, and time. Tintoretto's Difference offers at once an innovative study of this seminal artist, an elaboration of Deleuze's philosophy of the diagram, and a new avenue for a philosophical art history.
