Title: The 8 Brokens : Chinese Bapo Painting
Author: Berliner, Nancy
Price: $55.00
ISBN: 9780878468317
Record created on 06/19/2018
Description: Boston: Museum of Fine Arts, 2018. 27cm., hardcover, 160pp., 75 color illus.

Summary: Developed during the mid-19th century in China, the bapo (or "eight brokens") painting genre combines ingeniously realistic depictions of antique documents, such as calligraphies, rubbings, paintings and pages from old books, sometimes alongside everyday contemporary ephemera, including advertisements, receipts and postmarked envelopes. The resulting, seemingly haphazard, overlapping compositions contain coded reflections on the decay of cultural traditions, or wishes for the recipient's good fortune. Widespread in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bapo was never popular with the upper echelons of the Chinese art world, and as a result was never recorded in art-history texts or mentioned by cultural critics. It became a lost branch of Chinese art—almost completely forgotten for the past 60 years. This book explores the origins of bapo in Chinese visual culture and traces how it blossomed into an intriguing and inventive tradition in the hands of many artists.

Each map description includes a photograph, descriptin, and essay. These essays detail all the known sates and possible unknown issues, as well as give a complete census of copies known in public collections. The work if the result of the author's life-long devotion to the study of the topic, emphasizing an understanding of the maps, critically comparing each known map for various states and recording evidence of states of maps which no longer survive. Long awaited by the scholary, curatorial and collecting communities, the work will become the standard reference tool for scholars, curators, collectors, and archivists, as well as enthusiasts interested in learning about the richness and diversity of Italian cartographic publishing during its Golden Age. Title: CATHERINE BRADFORD : Paintings
Author: Nadel, Dan (ed)
Price: $40.00
ISBN: 9781942884361
Record created on 09/11/2018
Description: New York: Canada, 2018. 27cm., hardcover, 144pp., 65 color illus.

Summary: New York–based painter Katherine Bradford (born 1942) creates color-drenched scenes of swimming, water and gatherings of men and women, exploring how we see ourselves in relationship to each other with images that seem to generate their own milky and dreamlike light. Bradford spends months and sometimes years building up the surfaces of her paintings, slowly changing the paintings through repeated application of thinned-out acrylic paint. This book, her first monograph, collects her best paintings from 2015 to the present, alongside essays by Karen Wilkin, who explores Bradford's relationship to the history of American painting; Arthur Bradford, the painter's son, who contributes a memoir of his mother's coming of age, relatively late in life, as a painter; and Dan Nadel, who discusses the evolution of Bradford's current mode of painting and her relationship to her younger contemporaries at CANADA gallery.

Title: Stewards of Memory : The Past, Present, and Future of Historic Preservation at George Washington's Mount Vernon
Author: Cadou, Carol Borchert (ed)
Price: $60.00
ISBN: 9780813941516
Record created on 05/21/2018
Description: Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press, 2018. 23cm., hardcover, 256pp. illus.

Summary: Mount Vernon, despite its importance as the estate of George Washington, is subject to the same threats of time as any property and has required considerable resources and organization to endure as a historic site and house. This book provides a window into the broad scope of preservation work undertaken at Mount Vernon over the course of more than 160 years and places this work within the context of America’s regional and national preservation efforts. It was at Mount Vernon, beginning with efforts in 1853, that the American tradition of historic preservation truly took hold. As the nation’s oldest historic house museum, Mount Vernon offers a unique opportunity to chronicle preservation challenges and successes over time as well as to forecast those of the future. Stewards of Memory features essays by senior scholars who helped define American historic preservation in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, including Carl R. Lounsbury, George W. McDaniel, and Carter L. Hudgins. Their contributions - complemented by those of Scott E. Casper, Lydia Mattice Brandt, and Mount Vernon’s own preservation scholars - offer insights into the changing nature of the field. The multifaceted story told here will be invaluable to students of historic preservation, historic site professionals, specialists in the preservation field, and any reader with an interest in American historic preservation and Mount Vernon.

Title: I templi di Paestum : Tra restauro e manutenzione
Author: De Palma, Giovanna
Price: $67.50
ISBN: 9788849235661
Record created on 09/18/2018
Description: Roma: Gangemi, 2018. 30cm., pbk., 368pp. illus. Includes CD-Rom.

Description: Milano: Silvana, 2018. 28cm., pbk., 224pp., 80 illus. Exhibition held at Gallerie d’Italia – Palazzo Zevallos, Napoli.

Description: Foligno: Aguaplano, 2018. 24cm., pbk., 167pp., 55 color plates. Exhibition held at San Pietro, Perugia.

Summary: La mostra vuole gettare luce sull'enorme patrimonio artistico del Seicento in Umbria, documentandone in maniera eccellente la ricchezza e la varietà.

Price: $24.00

Description: Milan: Officina, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 144pp., 48 color illus. English edition.

Summary: In 1624 Orazio Gentileschi (1563-1639) left Italy for Paris, where he had been summoned by the Queen, Maria de Medici. Two years later he moved to London to work for the Duke of Buckingham and, after the Duke's assassination, for Charles I and his wife, Queen Henrietta Maria. Orazio died in London in 1639, while his daughter, Artemisia, who had joined him in 1638, remained in Britain till 1640. But these simple biographical facts do not do these great artists justice. A dozen stunning paintings and a number of documents, several of them previously unpublished, are all the remaining evidence that illuminates this period of the Gentileschis' personal lives. In this book, the Gentileschis' work is placed in the context of courtly patronage - a structure in which art and politics were strictly intertwined. Charles I was attempting to transform his court into a truly European one, art collections included, while papal diplomacy worked tirelessly to convert Charles so that he might join the ranks of Catholic monarchs. Art was instrumental to this attempt; Cardinal Francesco Barberini, on behalf of pope Urbano VIII, sent many artworks to the court of St. James. Evidently, art's function extended beyond the aesthetic. Paying tribute to art's prime position within the monarchic establishment of 17th-century Europe, this book will be an invaluable resource for any student of Art History.

Title: RALPH GIBSON : Self-Exposure
Author: Gibson, Ralph
Price: $49.95
ISBN: 9781912122103
Record created on 06/03/2018
Description: London: Heni, 2018. 33cm., pbk., 396pp., 285 images.

Summary: Self-Exposure is the autobiography of celebrated American art photographer Ralph Gibson. With his 80th birthday on the horizon in January 2019 and a career spanning over 50 years, Gibson is at a point of reflection in his life and work and decided to put pen to paper. Writing in candid prose, Gibson takes the reader through his life and career from his earliest memories of growing up in California (the son of a Hollywood director, Gibson's childhood is touched by the old glamour of the silver screen: the likes of Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth make appearances) to his time in the navy and his continuous love affair with photography. Gibson's memories are filled with rich characters and period details. Often moving, the narratives of his at times troublesome childhood provide a rich background to the charismatic artist Gibson has become. Gibson covers a range of topics such as music, Catholicism, his wife, Mary Jane, and a long line of fellow artists and photographers such as Dorothea Lange and Robert Frank. His ruminations on his life so far display a deep, thoughtful understanding and self-awareness that make this book a fascinating read in itself as well as an illuminating companion to his work. What emerges is an insight into the mind of an incredible, highly decorated artist. Evocatively illustrated, Self-Exposure presents Gibson's life story alongside his photographic work. Designed and produced in close collaboration with Gibson, this large-format publication-as much a biography as it is an artist's book-is Gibson's most personal book to date.

Title: Tree of Jesse Iconography in Northern Europe in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries
Author: Green, Susan L
Price: $150.00
ISBN: 9780815393771
Record created on 07/10/2018
Description: London: Routledge, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 240pp. illus.

Summary: This book is the first detailed investigation to focus on the late medieval use of Tree of Jesse imagery, traditionally a representation of the genealogical tree of Christ. In northern Europe, from the mid-fifteenth to the early sixteenth centuries, it could be found across a wide range of media. Yet, as this book vividly illustrates, it had evolved beyond a simple genealogy into something more complex, which could be modified to satisfy specific religious requirements. It was also able to function on a more temporal level, reflecting not only a clerical preoccupation with a sense of communal identity, but a more general interest in displaying a family’s heritage, continuity and/or social status. It is this dynamic and polyvalent element that makes the subject so fascinating.

Contents: Introduction ; The Tree of Jesse and the Speculum Humanae Salvationis ; The Tree of Jesse and Saint Anne ; The Tree of Jesse, the Carmelites, and other Religious Orders ; The Tree of Jesse and the Schöllenbach Altarpiece- A Case Study ; The Tree of Jesse and Antwerp Carved Altarpieces ; The Tree of Jesse in Northern France ; Conclusion.

Title: Intermedia, Fluxus and the Something Else Press: Selected Writings by Dick Higgins
Author: Clay, Seve ; Ken Friedman (eds)
Price: $35.00
ISBN: 9781938221200
Record created on 05/25/2018
Description: Los Angeles: Siglio, 2018. 25cm., pbk., 336pp., 95 color, 60 b&w illus.

Summary: There are few art-world figures as influential-and as little known-as Dick Higgins (1938-98), cofounder of Fluxus, "polyartist," poet, scholar, theorist, composer, performer and, not least, the publisher of the legendary Something Else Press. In 1965 he restored the term "intermedia" to the English language, giving it new dimension to recognize the dissolution of boundaries between traditional modes of art-making and the open field for new forms that cannot be compartmentalized. His own contributions to intermedia are many-as a participant and instigator of happenings, as writer and composer straddling traditional and vanguard forms, among others-but it was Something Else Press (1963-74) that redefined how "the book" could inhabit that energized, in-between space. Something Else Press was as much a critical statement and radical experiment as it was a collection of books by some of the most luminary artists and writers of the 20th century: Gertrude Stein, John Cage, Ray Johnson, Dieter Roth, Bern Porter, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Emmett Williams, Robert Filliou, and George Brecht, among many others. Along with his Great Bear Pamphlet series and the Something Else newsletter, Higgins exploited and subverted conventional book production and marketing strategies to get unconventional and avant-garde works into the hands of new and often unsuspecting readers. Edited by Granary Books publisher Steve Clay and Fluxus artist Ken Friedman, this judiciously curated and indispensable compendium of essays, theoretical writings and narrative prose dives deep into the ever-influential ideas that Higgins explored in theory and practice. Clay and Friedman have chosen works that illuminate Higgins' voracious intellectual appetite, encyclopedic body of knowledge and playful yet rigorous experimentation in a selection that includes many writings long out of print or difficult to find.

Title: LEWIS HINE : When Innovation Was King : The National Research Project 1936–1937
Author: Gutman, Judith Mara
Price: $45.00
ISBN: 9783958291898
Record created on 05/26/2016
Description: Göttingen: Steidl, Howard Greenberg Library, New York, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 144pp., 100 images.

Summary : In 1936, science teacher turned photographer Lewis Hine was commissioned by the National Research Project, a division of the Works Project Administration, to produce a visual document of the industries that the US government hoped would provide the jobs that would lift the country out of the Great Depression. Hine, already well established as a chronicler of social conditions of his day, produced more than 700 photographs for this project, the last major work of his career. By emphasizing the inherent tension between machinery and workers, Hine imbued these compelling images with his characteristic rigor and aesthetic appeal. These photographs, and their implied message, are particularly relevant today given high unemployment rates and radical shifts in the role of the worker in the rapidly changing world economy. Included in this book is an essay by the eminent photographic historian Judith Mara Gutman, in which she discusses the project and the photographs in the context of the economic conditions of the time and the artistic and technological innovations of the era.

Author: Anfam, David (intro)

Record created on 09/11/2018
Description: New York: Paul Kasmin Gallery, 2018. 31cm., hardcover, 121pp., 60 color, 22 b&w illus.

Summary: This book focuses on the iconic Umber Paintings of Lee Krasner (1908–84), which consist of only 24 paintings. Painted between 1959 and 1962, the Umber Paintings were realized during one of Krasner’s most ambitious periods of cproduction following the sudden and tragic loss of her husband, Jackson Pollock. During this time of newfound solitude, Krasner moved into Pollock’s studio at their home in the Springs, East Hampton, which enabled her to experiment on large canvases for the first time. In addition to the increase in scale, this period was also characterized by a further commitment to %allover% compositions. By the end of the 1950s, Krasner’s emotional turmoil confined her to work only at night under artificial light. The Umber Paintings convey a distinctive rawness and intensity that was unprecedented in her oeuvre until this point, and remain lauded as the artist’s most psychologically evocative works.

Record created on 09/03/2018

Summary: The important Decapolis Gerasa has been object of archaeological investigations since 1907. This volume brings together scholars who have undertaken research in the city within the last four decades and presents the results of these projects. 110 years ago, in 1907, the first excavations were undertaken in the Decapolis city Gerasa. It was the beginning of an intensive and continuous period of research in this major city of the Decapolis. Large-scale excavations were undertaken in the 1920s and 1930s after the institution of the mandate. These were followed by several international projects, most noteworthy the large initiative begun in the late 1970s, Jerash Archaeological Project. From the outset of excavations within the urban space of Jerash, the Greco-Roman city Gerasa with its public monuments along the cardo was one of the foci. Furthermore, Christian churches found special interest in the early years as well as in later periods. In the last decennia, research interests have shifted, moving away from the large public monuments to the areas beyond the city centre and chronological focus left behind the classical and early Christian periods and encompassed the later periods, in particular the Early and Middle Islamic periods. Also, the restoration and preservation of the monuments and the presentation to the public have become important issues but also challenges. These changed interests reflect current questions of archaeology, which have intensified the view of long-term transformations and the transitional periods as well as relations between city and hinterland. In order to move the understanding of the development of Jerash forward, this volume brings together researchers who have worked in Jerash over the last decades. This communal effort pushes the contextualisation of this important site further within a local, regional as well as wider framework of the Hellenistic, Roman, Islamic and Medieval worlds. (Jerash Papers, 1)

Author: Maner, Brent
Price: $120.00
ISBN: 9780226592916
Record created on 04/02/2018
Description: Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 336pp., 8 illus.

Summary: In Germany, Nazi ideology casts a long shadow over the history of archaeological interpretation. Propaganda, school curricula, and academic publications under the regime drew spurious conclusions from archaeological evidence to glorify the Germanic past and proclaim chauvinistic notions of cultural and racial superiority. But was this powerful and violent version of the distant past a nationalist invention or a direct outcome of earlier archaeological practices? By exploring the myriad pathways along which people became familiar with archaeology and the ancient past—from exhibits at local and regional museums to the plotlines of popular historical novels—this broad cultural history shows that the use of archaeology for nationalistic pursuits was far from preordained. In Germany’s Ancient Pasts, Brent Maner offers a vivid portrait of the development of antiquarianism and archaeology, the interaction between regional and national history, and scholarly debates about the use of ancient objects to answer questions of race, ethnicity, and national belonging. While excavations in central Europe throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries fed curiosity about the local landscape and inspired musings about the connection between contemporary Germans and their “ancestors,” antiquarians and archaeologists were quite cautious about using archaeological evidence to make ethnic claims. Even during the period of German unification, many archaeologists emphasized the local and regional character of their finds and treated prehistory as a general science of humankind. As Maner shows, these alternative perspectives endured alongside nationalist and racist abuses of prehistory, surviving to offer positive traditions for the field in the aftermath of World War II. A fascinating investigation of the quest to turn pre- and early history into history, Germany’s Ancient Pasts sheds new light on the joint sway of science and politics over archaeological interpretation.

Title: VINCENZO PACETTI, Roma, l’Europa all’epoca del Grand Tour
Author: Picozzi, Maria Grazia (et al)
Price: $245.00
ISBN: 9788891315250
Record created on 10/31/2018
Description: Roma: L'Erma di Bretschneider, 2018. 29cm., pbk., 400pp., 384 illus.

Summary: This volume, initially conceived as an edition of the acts of the International Conference on Vincenzo Pacetti held in Rome in November 2013 - an important event that followed the full publication of Pacetti' s Giornali two years before -, was subsequently expanded to include further studies and contributions on the topic. It was thus necessary to divide the volume into four sections regarding the themes related both to the figure of Pacetti - for whom the definition of sculptor today appears too reductive - and to the artistic reality of Rome at the height of the Grand Tour in the second half of the eighteenth century. The first section is therefore dedicated to Pacetti and the contemporary artistic milieu, in which he moved with ease and skill, navigating events and changes; the second examines the relations and links that existed between the sculptor and the Antique, to reconstruct a series of cross references that formed the basis of his career and success. There follows a section related to Pacetti and drawing considered both on the level of his collecting of works in this medium (following his acquisition of the collection of Bartolomeo Cavaceppi) and on that of the artist' s own execution of various sheets, now found in various European museums. The volume concludes with an examination of the relationships the sculptor maintained with international late eighteenth-century collectors who often visited his studio in Rome: from those of the Papal court to others from the nearby Kingdom of Naples, to the many English and Swedish clients, and the young Spanish artist-pensionados of the Madrid Academy of Fine Arts. Foremost among Pacetti' s Russian clients was Richard Sutherland, official banker to Empress Catherine II, who purchased a number of statues from Pacetti for the courtly residences of Saint Petersburg. What emerges is a wide-ranging and multi-faceted picture that has involved diverse specialists in ancient and early modern art, archaeologists who are also experts in collecting, and art historians, each of whom has responded to an aspect of the polyhedral and versatile personality of Vincenzo Pacetti to better illuminate our understanding of this complex period at the end of the Enlightenment century.

ISBN: 9780847862948
Record created on 07/20/2018
Description: New York: Rizzoli Electa, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 288pp. illus.

Summary: Sculptor Roxy Paine's installations can feel like a cross between an alien landscape or a mad-scientist's laboraoty inside of a Twilight Zone episode. Bringing together "science" and the natural world, his surreal and sometimes eerie work has garnered him an elevated place in the pantheon of uber-creative artists who create their own fantastical universes. This monograph - the most comprehensive on the market - expertly surveys nearly 20 years of work. Since 1989, Roxy Paine has been filling galleries, museums, and sites worldwide with his dark, whimsical installations and sculptures, melding the industrial and the organic to explore manmade and natural systems--and their ramifications. Paine divides his work into categories: "Art Making Machines," mad-scientist mini-factories that produce works of art; "Replicants," replicas of flora and fungi made out of industrial materials; "Fungal Fields," painterly compositions of his fungi sculptures; "Specimen Cases," vitrines filled with his fungal and floral replicas; and "Dendroids," metal tree-like forms. Through these industrial-natural visions, Paine reveals the horror and wonder when science and nature collide.

Looking at the work of a broad range of artists including Bruce Nauman, Julien Breton, Jeremy Deller, Takashi Murakami, Tracey Emin, Christian Boltanski, and more, The Word is Art explores this and related questions and demonstrates how words remain critical, powerful, and central to art practice. Presenting major areas where the word has dominated artistic practice, this book takes us on a fascinating and richly illustrated global tour of diverse contemporary art forms.

Title: Photographic Literacy : Cameras in the Hands of Russian Authors
Author: Reischl, Katherine M. H
Price: $49.95
ISBN: 9781501724367
Record created on 04/23/2018
Description: Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2018. 27cm., hardcover, 288pp., 20 color, 78 b&w illus.

Summary: Photography, introduced to Russia in 1839, was nothing short of a sensation. Its rapid proliferation challenged the other arts, including painting and literature, as well as the very integrity of the self. If Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky greeted the camera with skepticism in the nineteenth century, numerous twentieth-century authors welcomed it with a warm embrace. As Katherine M. H. Reischl shows in Photographic Literacy, authors as varied as Leonid Andreev, Ilya Ehrenburg, and Alexander Solzhenitsyn picked up the camera and reshaped not only their writing practices but also the sphere of literacy itself. For these authors, a single photograph or a photograph as illustration is never an endpoint; their authorial practices continually transform and animate the frozen moment. But just as authors used images to shape the reception of their work and selves, Russian photographers — including Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky and Alexander Rodchenko — used text to shape the reception of their visual work. From the diary to print, the literary word imbues that photographic moment with a personal life story, and frames and reframes it in the writing of history. In this primer on photographic literacy, Reischl argues for the central place that photography has played in the formation of the Russian literary imagination over the course of roughly seventy years. From image to text and back again, she traces the visual consciousness of modern Russian literature as captured through the lens of the Russian author-photographer.

Description: Munich: Hirmer, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 320pp., 170 color plates. Exhibition held at Alte Pinakothek, Munich. English text.

Summary: Painting re-invented itself during the 15th century in Florence. Artists experimented in an innovative manner with pictorial subjects, forms and techniques and thus arrived at an unprecedented diversity of means of artistic expression. This volume tells in an interesting and nuanced manner of a unique creative development which permanently changed art in Europe. By means of prestigious works of painting, sculpture and drawing the book affords a wide range of insights into the world of ideas and the working methods of the Florentine artists. With new self-confidence they investigated reality and the laws of harmony and beauty. They drew from Nature and studied the art of Antiquity. Starting out from drawing and in competition with sculpture, the painters thus discovered completely new forms for the realistic portrayal of Man, for example in the portrait, as well as emotionally moving devotional pictures. The latest research on the outstanding Florentine paintings in the Alte Pinakothek permits a new perspective on one of the most exciting chapters of art history.

Description: Davenport: Um Yeah Arts, 2018. 27cm., hardcover, 160pp. illus.

Summary: Tangentially Parenthetical is a selection of photographs from Ed Templeton's vast street photography archive—curated, arranged and then rearranged by the man himself. The next chapter to his previous book of photos (Wayward Cognitions, 2014), Tangentially Parenthetical picks up where the latter collection ended. By combining intimate, accidental and unconnected moments into one linear piece of work, he tells hundreds of new stories through the thoughtful arrangement of semi-related yet completely unfastened imagery. "I'm out there shooting photos all the time that don't necessarily fall under any theme other than general life," says Templeton, "which is a lame title for a book." With a wink to the absurd, sandwiched between a cover of patterned parentheses and with an afterword built from his own stream-of-consciousness storytelling, Templeton delivers a visual mountain from an archive of stunning molehills—the images are carefully chosen, shuffled by hand and laid out with the dueling impulses of wonder and wit. Born in 1972 and raised in the suburbs of Orange County, California, Ed Templeton is a painter, photographer and a respected cult figure in the subculture of skateboarding. His work has been exhibited worldwide.

Title: Pin-Ups : TOULOUSE-LAUTREC and the Art of Celebrity
Author: Fowle, Frances ; Hannah Brockehurst
Price: $28.00
ISBN: 9781911054214
Record created on 04/25/2018
Description: Edinburgh: National Galleries of Scotland, 2018. 29cm., hardcover, 128pp., 90 color illus. Exhibition catalogue.

Paris in the fin-de-siècle was known as the 'city of pleasure’; famed for its cabarets, dance halls and cafés. Most famous of all were the nightspots of the bohemian district of Montmartre, where Toulouse-Lautrec lived, worked and socialized, including the now legendary café-cabarets Le Moulin Rouge and Le Chat Noir. Pin-Ups: Toulouse Lautrec and the Art of Celebrity will focus on Toulouse-Lautrec’s lithographic posters, portfolio prints and illustrations which made stars of Montmartre’s venues and their entertainers - personalities such as Yvette Guilbert, Jane Avril and Aristide Bruant. Toulouse-Lautrec’s career coincided with a revolutionary moment in the history of western printmaking - the development of the poster as a means of mass-marketing – and lithography and poster-making were central to his creative process from his first experiments in the medium in 1891 until his death in 1901. Around 75 works by Toulouse-Lautrec and his contemporaries will be on show, including prints by Pierre Bonnard, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen and Jules Chéret. British artists were equally attracted to the dynamic café culture of Montmartre and the exhibition will also showcase works by artists such as Walter Sickert, Arthur Melville, JD Fergusson and William Nicholson, among others.

Title: VASARI's Words : The 'Lives of the Artists' as a History of Ideas in the Italian Renaissance
Author: Biow, Douglas
Price: $105.00
ISBN: 9781108472050
Record created on 04/20/2018
Description: Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, ca. 300pp., 41 b&w illus.

Summary: In this book, Douglas Biow analyzes Vasari's Lives of the Artists—often considered the first great work of art history in the modern era— from a new perspective. He focuses on key words and shows how they address a variety of compelling, culturally determined ideas circulating in late Renaissance Italy. The keywords chosen for this study investigate five seemingly divergent, yet still interconnected, ideas. What does it mean to have a “profession,” professione, and possess “genius,” ingegno, in the visual arts? How is “speed,”prestezza, valued among visual artists of the period and how is “time,” tempo, conceptualized in Vasari's narrative and descriptions of visual art? Finally, how is the “night,” notte, conceived and visually represented as a distinct span of time in The Lives? Written in an engaging manner for specialists and non-specialists alike, Vasari's Words places The Lives—a truly foundational and innovative book of Western culture—within the context of the modern discipline of intellectual history.

Summary: This book studies the life, work and significance of Velázquez through a broad variety of approaches and themes ranging from the first stage of his career and the problems of attribution posed by two pictures related to this period to the reception of his painting. Artists, critics, historians, writers, museum specialists and anonymous viewers parade through its pages to explain the place the Sevillian artist occupied in the imaginary of western culture. Velázquez devoted most of his efforts to court portraiture, which is analysed here from the point of view of the representational formulas he progressively adopted, always as a compromise between aesthetic challenges, ceremonial culture of the period, political ideals, tradition, and the expectations aroused by the depiction of the king and his entourage. Between portrait and portrait, the Sevillian approached “history painting”, a field in which he displayed an extraordinary originality through complex stories constructed using a different and original technique. It was here that he expressed most explicitly his stance towards pictorial tradition and the role he wished to play in it. Through the fourteen texts that make up this volume, the author presents one of the most discerning recent reflections on the figure of Velázquez and the significance of his oeuvre.

Summary: Like many antiquarians of his day, the German art historian and archaeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717–1768) first learned about the ancient world through immersion in literature. As a teacher then librarian in his native Germany, Winckelmann encountered the classics primarily through literary texts, as well as the souveni—coins, gems and figurines—that Grand Tourists and other travellers had brought north from their visits to Italy. Once he arrived in Rome, where he rose to prominence at Prefect of Antiquities in the Vatican, Winckelmann studied the remains of Greek, Graeco-Roman and Roman art on a larger scale. Through personal contacts, letters and other writings, Winckelmann influenced his and subsequent generations of scholars, aesthetes, collectors, craftsmen and artists.. Winckelmann and Curiosity in the 18th-Century Gentleman's Library explores the scholar's varied influence on the arts in Britain, through printed media, architecture and decorative arts.

Title: La vita come opera d'arte. ANTON MARIA ZANETTI e le sue collezioni
Author: Craievich, Alberto
Price: $59.95
ISBN: 9788884351029
Record created on 10/18/2018
Description: Crocetta del Montello: Antiga, 2018. 29cm., pbk., 336pp., 250 illus. Exhibition held at Museo del Settecento Veneziano, Ca' Rezzonico, Venezia. Italian text.

Summary: Anton Maria Zanetti (1679-1767) was a central figure in the eighteenth-century history of Venetian collecting and in the world’s endorsement of Venetian art. An art patron and influential intermediary on behalf of nobles and sovereigns, commissioning and purchasing works by Venice’s most famous artists, Zanetti was perhaps the most influential character in the Venetian art scene of the time. Known as “il Vecchio”, or “di Girolamo”, to distinguish him from his namesake younger cousin who was a famous librarian at the Marciana Library in Venice, Zanetti was not only a passionate collector but also a talented draughtsman and skilled engraver. After his father’s death in 1711, he was forced to provide for the rest of the family as an insurance agent, but despite difficulties, this did not prevent him from following his own inclinations. A friend to artists such as Canaletto, Rosalba Carriera, Sebastiano and Marco Ricci and Giambattista Tiepolo, Zanetti was in close contact with the most important European collectors.

He himself assembled an extraordinary collection of antique gems, drawings and prints that was dispersed after his death. He also promoted splendid publishing initiatives, most notably two volumes on ancient sculpture, now conserved in the vestibule of the Marciana Library and one of the most beautiful and luxurious illustrated publications of the entire eighteenth century. An inexhaustible collection of letters, now spread among libraries and private collectors, documents his dense network of relationships and friendships and offers a rare insight into the cultural life of the period. To commemorate this extraordinary figure, the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia is dedicating him an exhibition that highlights his activities as an artist and patron. Testimonies from his life in the form of books, letters, engravings and drawings, none of which are usually exhibited for conservation reasons, will be shown together with art from his collection, including works by Tiepolo, Sebastiano and Marco Ricci, Palma il Giovane and others, now preserved in the city’s museums, among these the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia, the Giorgio Cini Foundation, the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana and Venice’s civic museums, as well as in several private collections.
