Title: Domesticating Empire : Egyptian Landscapes in Pompeian Gardens

Description: Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 416pp., 100 illus., 23 in color.

Summary: Domesticating Empire is the first contextually-oriented monograph on Egyptian imagery in Roman households. Caitlín Barrett draws on case studies from Flavian Pompeii to investigate the close association between representations of Egypt and a particular type of Roman household space: the domestic garden. Through paintings and mosaics portraying the Nile, canals that turned the garden itself into a miniature "Nilescape," and statuary depicting Egyptian themes, many gardens in Pompeii offered ancient visitors evocations of a Roman vision of Egypt. Simultaneously faraway and familiar, these imagined landscapes made the unfathomable breadth of empire compatible with the familiarity of home. In contrast to older interpretations that connect Roman "Aegyptiaca" to the worship of Egyptian gods or the problematic concept of "Egyptomania," a contextual analysis of these garden assemblages suggests new possibilities for meaning. In Pompeian houses, Egyptian and Egyptian-looking objects and images interacted with their settings to construct complex entanglements of "foreign" and "familiar," "self" and "other." Representations of Egyptian landscapes in domestic gardens enabled individuals to present themselves as sophisticated citizens of empire. Yet at the same time, household material culture also exerted an agency of its own: domesticizing, familiarizing, and "Romanizing" once-foreign images and objects. That which was once imagined as alien and potentially dangerous was now part of the domus itself, increasingly incorporated into cultural constructions of what it meant to be "Roman." Featuring brilliant illustrations in both color and black and white, Domesticating Empire reveals the importance of material culture in transforming household space into a microcosm of empire.

Contents: 1: Introduction: Egypt in the Garden. 2: Imagining the Nile: Affordances and Contexts . 3: From Egypt to Oikoumene: Interactive Landscapes in the Casa dell'Efebo . 4: Self, "Other," and Beyond in the Casa del Medico . 5: Making Meaning on the Margins: Nilotic Marginalia in the Casa del Fauno. 6: Model Worlds: Three-Dimensional Nilotica in the Casa di Acceptus e Euhodia. 7: Conclusions: Egyptian Landscapes in Context.

Title: How Do We Look: The Body, the Divine, and the Question of Civilization
Author: Beard, Mary
Price: $24.95
ISBN: 9781631494406
Record created on 03/20/2018
Description: New York: Liveright, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 240pp., 92 color illus.

Summary: From prehistoric Mexico to modern Istanbul, Mary Beard looks beyond the familiar canon of Western imagery to explore the history of art, religion, and humanity. Conceived as a gorgeously illustrated accompaniment to “How Do We Look” and “The Eye of Faith,” the famed Civilisations shows on PBS, renowned classicist Mary Beard has created this elegant volume on how we have looked at art. Focusing in Part I on the Olmec heads of early Mesoamerica, the colossal statues of the pharaoh Amenhotep III, and the nudes of classical Greece, Beard explores the power, hierarchy, and gender politics of the art of the ancient world, and explains how it came to define the so-called civilized world. In Part II, Beard chronicles some of the most breathtaking religious imagery ever made—whether at Angkor Wat, Ravenna, Venice, or in the art of Jewish and Islamic calligraphers— to show how all religions, ancient and modern, have faced irreconcilable problems in trying to picture the divine. With this classic volume, Beard redefines the Western-and male-centric legacies of Ernst Gombrich and Kenneth Clark.

Title: Amazing! MEL BOCHNER Prints : From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation
Author: Vaughan, Carolyn (ed)
Price: $75.00
ISBN: 9781732321205
Record created on 09/10/2018
Description: Portland: Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, 2018. 29cm., hardcover, 256pp., 220 illus.

Summary: For more than 50 years, American conceptualist Mel Bochner (born 1940) has been shaping dialogs between art and language through exhibition concepts, paintings and sculptures that embrace systems and structures to reveal their cracks and limitations, undermining the means we use to comprehend the world. Bochner created his first prints in 1973 at the invitation of publisher Robert Feldman of Parasol Press (who introduced a generation of minimalist and conceptual artists to printmaking through his work at Crown Point Press). Since then, Bochner has employed many different forms of printmaking, using and abusing its material possibilities and its unpredictability to counter the methodical fashion in which plates and stencils are cut, characters per line are fixed, or print runs set. This volume surveys Bochner's longstanding engagement with various types of printmaking, from aquatints to monoprints.

Title: Experimental Selves: Person and Experience in Early Modern Europe
Author: Braider, Christopher
Price: $90.00
ISBN: 9781487503680
Record created on 05/08/2018
Description: Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 419pp., 8 color, 51 b&w illus.

Summary: Drawing on the generous semantic range the term enjoyed in early modern usage, Experimental Selves argues that ‘person,’ as early moderns understood this concept, was an ‘experimental’ phenomenon—at once a given of experience and the self-conscious arena of that experience. Person so conceived was discovered to be a four-dimensional creature: a composite of mind or "inner" personality; of the body and outward appearance; of social relationship; and of time. Through a series of case studies keyed to a wide variety of social and cultural contexts, including theatre, the early novel, the art of portraiture, pictorial experiments in vision and perception, theory of knowledge, and the new experimental science of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the book examines the manifold shapes person assumed as an expression of the social, natural, and aesthetic ‘experiments’ or experiences to which it found itself subjected as a function of the mere contingent fact of just having them.

Contents: 1. The Shape of Knowledge - The Culture of Experiment and the Byways of Expression. 2. The Art of the Inside Out - Vision and Expression in Hoogstraten's London Peepshow. 3. Persons and Portraits - The Vicissitudes of Burckhardt's Individual. 4. Justice in the Marketplace - The Invisible Hand in Ben Jonson's Bartholomew Fayre. 5. Actor, Act, and Action - The Poetics of Agency in Corneille, Racine, and Molière . 6. The Experiment of Beauty - Vraisemblance Extraordinaire in Lafayette's Princesse de Clèves. 7. Groping in the Dark - Aesthetics and Ontology in Diderot and Kant.

Title: I conoscitori tedeschi tra Otto e Novecento
Author: Caglioti, Francesco (et al)
Price: $59.50
ISBN: 9788897737803
Record created on 10/10/2015
Description: Milano: Officina Libraria, 2018. 24cm., pbk., 530pp., 32 color, 64 b&w illus.

Title: Stadium : A Building that renders the Image of a City
Author: Celedon, Alejandra ; Stephannie Fell (eds)
Price: $39.00
ISBN: 9783038601081
Record created on 07/20/2018
Description: Zurich: Park Books, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 224pp., 52 color, 59 b&w illus. English-Spanish text.

Summary: “Stadium” is the theme chosen for the Chilean Pavilion at the Sixteenth International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. The intent is to capture the story of the National Stadium in Santiago—both a building and a city for a day. On September 29, 1979, 40,000 families filled the stadium’s seats; around 250,000 people from all over the country’s capital. The occasion was the signing of documents that transformed these people into proprietors. Prior to the event, the press circulated a list of names of the people summoned to the stadium — beneficiaries of “Operación Sitio,” a public housing program — together with a plan that showed the stadium subdivided into boroughs. This book tells the dual story of the stadium and the exhibition at the Chilean Pavilion, interwoven with the Architecture Exhibition’s broad theme of “Freespace.” The book is organized into four chapters, each featuring short essays and illustrations, including drawings, plans, and photographs. In the making of the exhibition, the stadium’s floorplan no longer demarcates the stands but visualizes another city marginalized from its center. Each section is extruded as a block, engraved with the urban fabric of the fragment of the city from which it originates. A timely contribution to a continuing conversation, Stadium will be welcomed by architects, urban planners, and those who provide housing. (La Biennale di Venezia - 16. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura)

Title: Il Mondo dell'archeologia cristiana
Author: Cerulli Irelli, Giuseppina
Price: $450.00

Record created on 08/01/2018
Description: Roma: L'Erma di Bretschneider, 2018. 24cm., pbk., 688pp.

(Studia Archaeologica, 225)

Record created on 09/11/2018
Description: New York: Karms, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 560pp., 550 illus.

Craven is well known for these mesmerizing portraits, whose serial character affirms the prayer-like sense of attention informing their dailiness, as well as for her "stripe" or "band" paintings, of which she says: "my paintings are a result of mere observation, experiment and chance and contain a variable that’s constant and ever-changing—the moment just past. The stripes are so I can see what I just mixed … it is a memory and a documentation of the work at the same time." The most substantial overview yet published on this virtuoso painter, the book includes essays by David Salle, Sarah French and Dana Miller.

Title: Everything Is Connected : Art and Conspiracy
Author: Eklund, Douglas ; Ian Alteveer
Price: $50.00
ISBN: 9781588396594
Record created on 02/18/2018
Description: New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2018. 27cm., hardcover, 272pp., 220 illus. Exhibition to be held at The Met Breuer, New York.

Summary: Shaped by events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Vietnam War, Watergate, the Iran-Contra affair, and 9/11, conspiracy theories have flourished and influenced our collective worldview. This provocative book examines how artists from the 1960s to the present explore both the covert operations of power and the mutual suspicion between governments and their citizens. Featured are works by 30 contemporary artists—including Sarah Charlesworth, Hans Haacke, Rachel Harrison, Jenny Holzer, Mike Kelley, Mark Lombardi, Cady Noland, Trevor Paglen, Raymond Pettibon, Jim Shaw, and Sue Williams—in media ranging from painting, drawing, and photography to video and installation art. Whether they uncover webs of deceit hidden in the public record or dive headlong into the paranoid fever dreams of the disaffected, artists examine the rhetorical strategies of conspiracy researchers and endeavor to expose evil in high places. Everything Is Connected elucidates the many ways in which artists use their work to take a powerful and proactive stance against the political corruption, consumerism, bureaucracy, and media manipulation that are hallmarks of contemporary life.

Description: London: Heni, 2018. 31cm., pbk., 240pp., 114 illus.

Summary: This superbly produced publication gathers over 100 watercolors made between 1972 and 2016 by Paris- and California-based Lebanese artist and publisher Simone Fattal (born 1942). Combining painting and collage, these works range from abstractions to near-abstract depictions of gardens and biomorphic forms. Fattal studied philosophy at the Ecole des Lettres, Beirut, and began painting in the late 1960s, eventually fleeing Beirut in 1980 with the outbreak of the civil war. Having moved to California, Fattal founded the Post-Apollo Press, a publishing house dedicated to innovative literature. In 1988, she returned to art after enrolling at the Art Institute of San Francisco. Here, reproductions of works are preceded by a discussion with Hans Ulrich Obrist in which Fattal ruminates on her childhood in Damascus, her earliest encounters with modernist and postwar art in Europe, her sculptural work and thethemes that inspire her affinity with for watercolor.

Title: Varallo ai tempi di GAUDENZIO FERRARI
Author: Agosti, Giovanni (et al)
Price: $34.50
ISBN: 9788899765880
Record created on 08/27/2018
Description: Milano: Officina Libraria, 2018. 24cm., pbk., 144pp., 112 color illus.

Title: Magic Realism: Art in Weimar Germany 1919–33
Author: Gale, Matthew ; Katy Wan (eds)
Price: $24.99
ISBN: 9781849765886
Record created on 03/02/2018
Description: London: Tate Publishing, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 96pp., 75 color illus.

Summary: This elegant publication reveals a vibrant and under-explored seam of modernist painting in Germany and Austria during the Weimar era. Although “magic realism” is a term today more commonly associated with the 20th-century literature of Latin America, it was first coined in 1925 by the German art historian and critic Franz Roh to describe an emerging style of modern realist paintings with fantasy or dreamlike subjects, and is often seen as parallel to or overlapping with the New Objectivity movement. Published to accompany a major display at Tate Modern in London, Magic Realism draws upon the remarkable assembly of German and Austrian paintings in the George Economou Collection and features rarely seen work by Otto Dix, George Grosz, Christian Schad, and Jeanne Mammen among many others.

Author: Huberman, Anthony (ed)
Price: $20.00
ISBN: 9780984960941
Record created on 09/11/2018
Description: San Francisco: Cca Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 88pp., 28 illus.

Summary: The CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, an exhibition space and research institute in San Francisco, dedicates year-long seasons of discussions and public events to a single artist. In 2016–17, the American artist David Hammons (born 1943) was "on our mind." The book begins with the previously unpublished transcript of a rare artist talk given by Hammons in 1994 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, on the occasion of his exhibition there. It then introduces a series of photographs the artist sent to the Wattis Institute in 2017, interspersed with texts by the Bay Area poet Tongo Eisen-Martin and the writer and critic Fred Moten. Much like Hammons’ work, this publication raises more questions than answers. Rather than functioning as a comprehensive introduction to the artist, David Hammons Is on Our Mind offers visual and textual elements that relate obliquely to the enigmatic artist’s oeuvre.

Title: YAYOI KUSAMA : Festival of Life
Author: Sorkin, Jenni
Price: $70.00
ISBN: 9781941701812
Record created on 05/25/2018
Description: New York: David Zwirner, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 152pp., 65 color illus. Exhibition held at Cleveland Museum of Art.

Summary: In a unique style that is both sensory and utopian, Yayoi Kusama's work-which spans paintings, performances, room-size presentations, sculptural installations, literary works, films, fashion, design and interventions within existing architectural structures-has transcended some of the most important art movements of the second half of the 20th century, including pop art and minimalism. As Roberta Smith wrote in the New York Times, "These paintings form a great big infinity room of their own, but one in which each part is also an autonomous work of art, its own piece of wobbly, handwrought infinity … their vitality is infectious." Yayoi Kusama: Festival of Life documents the artist's exhibition at David Zwirner's Chelsea location in New York in late 2017, featuring a selection of paintings from her iconic My Eternal Soul series, new large-scale flower sculptures, a polka-dotted environment and two Infinity Mirror Rooms. The monograph includes new scholarship on the artist by Jenni Sorkin, as well as a special foldout poster.

Title: JUDY GLICKMAN LAUDER : Beyond the Shadows: The Holocaust and the Danish Exception
Author: Lauder, Judy Glickman ; Elie Wiesel (et al)
Price: $50.00
ISBN: 9781597114493
Record created on 07/24/2018
Description: New York: Aperture, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 160pp., 85 images.

Summary: The extraordinary experiences of ordinary people—their suffering and their unimaginable bravery—are the subject of Judy Glickman Lauder’s remarkable photographs. Beyond the Shadows responds to the mass murder of Jews during the Holocaust, while telling the uplifting story of how the citizens and leadership of Denmark, under occupation and at tremendous risk, defied the Third Reich to transport the country’s Jews to safety in Sweden. Over the past thirty years Glickman Lauder has captured the intensity of the death camps in Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia in dark and expressive photographs, telling of a world turned upside down. In contrast, the redemptive and uplifting story of the “Danish exception” is told through portraits of Danish Jewish survivors and Danish rescuers. Over the course of a few intense weeks in 1943, the vast majority of Denmark’s Jewish population, seven thousand people, along with nearly seven hundred non-Jewish spouses, were hidden in boats and carried across the Oresund to safety in Sweden. Denmark is the only nation in Western Europe that can claim the rescue of its Jewish population from the Holocaust.

With texts by Holocaust scholars Michael Berenbaum and Judith S. Goldstein, recollections by Danish Jewish survivors, and a previously unpublished text by Elie Wiesel, written in response to this body of work, Beyond the Shadows demonstrates passionately what hate can lead to, and what can be done to stand in its path.

Title: LEE MILLER and Surrealism in Britain
Author: Clayton, Eleanor (ed)
Price: $69.99
ISBN: 9781848222724
Record created on 12/27/2017
Description: London: Lund Humphries, 2018. 27cm., hardcover, 160pp., 40 color, 60 b&w illus. Exhibition held at the Hepworth, Wakefield.

Summary: Lee Miller (1907-1977) attracts enduring fascination - a female pioneer who is often presented as a singular figure. However, she was also integrated within a creative network of artists that helped change the course of art history in the twentieth century. Miller moved to London in the late 1930s, just as a rich strand of Surrealist practice was burgeoning in Britain. Part of this artistic hub, she captured productive collisions between the artists who found themselves in Britain during the 1930s and 1940s through her photographs. Additionally, she exhibited alongside British Surrealists such as Eileen Agar and Henry Moore in often overlooked London exhibitions, while also dispersing Surrealist imagery into the worlds of fashion, commercial photography and journalism via her interdisciplinary photographic practice. Presenting for the first time Lee Miller's photographs of, and collaborations with, important Surrealist artists working in Britain (alongside their artworks), this important book tells the story of an exciting cultural moment. Essential for all students and enthusiasts of Surrealism and those enthralled by the striking photography of Lee Miller, this book reveals the social and cultural networks in which she was embedded, offering a holistic view of her work and the life of the Surrealist movement in Britain.

Title: WILLIAM MORRIS and His Palace of Art: Architecture, Interiors and Design at Red House
Author: Wild, Tessa
Price: $65.00
ISBN: 9781781300558
Record created on 12/26/2016
Description: London: Philip Wilson, in association with the National Trust, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 272pp., 175 color illus.

Summary: William Morris and his Palace of Art is a comprehensive new study of Red House, Bexleyheath; the only house commissioned by William Morris and the first independent architectural work of his close friend, Philip Webb. Morris moved in to Red House as an ebullient young man of 26, with an independent income and a head brimming with ideas and the persistent question of 'how best to live? Red House, together with its Pre-Raphaelite garden, stands as the physical embodiment of his exuberant spirit, youthful ambition, passionate medievalism, creativity and great sense of possibility. For five intense years from 1860-5, it was a place of halcyon days - happy family life, loyal friendship, good humoured competition, and the jovial campaign of decorating; furnishing the house and designing the garden. Drawing on a wealth of new physical evidence, this book argues that Red House constitutes an ambitious and critical chapter in his design history. It will re-consider the inspiration it provided for the founding of 'the Firm' of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later Morris & Co.), in 1861, and the vital collaboration of Webb, Burne-Jones, Rossetti and their intimate circle in realising Morris's dream for his house.

Author: Murray, Damon ; Stephen Sorrell (eds)
Price: $32.50
ISBN: 9780995745520
Record created on 05/27/2018
Description: London: Fuel, 2018. 17 x 21cm., hardcover, 192pp. illus.

Summary: Brutal concrete hotels, futurist TV towers, heroic statues of workers—this collection of Soviet-era postcards documents the uncompromising landscape of the Eastern Bloc through its buildings and monuments. These are interspersed with quotes from prominent figures of the time, which both support and confound the ideologies presented in the images. In contrast to the photographs of a ruined and abandoned Soviet empire we are accustomed to seeing today, the scenes depicted here publicize the bright future of communism: social housing blocks, palaces of culture and monuments to comradeship. Dating from the 1960s to the 1980s, they offer a nostalgic yet revealing insight into social and architectural values of the time, acting as a window through which we can examine cars, people and of course, buildings. These postcards are at once sinister, funny, poignant and surreal.

Author: Natif, Mika

Record created on 03/31/2018
Description: Leiden: Brill, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 310pp., 86 color illus.

Summary: In Mughal Occidentalism, Mika Natif elucidates the meaningful and complex ways in which Mughal artists engaged with European art and techniques from the 1580s-1630s. Using visual and textual sources, this book argues that artists repurposed Christian and Renaissance visual idioms to embody themes from classical Persian literature and represent Mughal policy, ideology and dynastic history. A reevaluation of illustrated manuscripts and album paintings incorporating landscape scenery, portraiture, and European objects demonstrates that the appropriation of European elements was highly motivated by Mughal concerns. This book aims to establish a better understanding of cross-cultural exchange from the Mughal perspective by emphasizing the agency of local artists active in the workshops of Emperors Akbar and Jahangir.

Author: Bourgeois, Caroline
Price: $60.00
ISBN: 9788831729031
Record created on 07/20/2018
Description: Venice: Marsilio, 2018. 31cm., hardcover, 264pp. illus. English edition.

Summary: Albert Oehlen has established himself as one of the leading figures in contemporary painting thanks to a continually evolving practice that focuses more on overcoming formal limitations and on experimentation than on the subject of the work. Music has played a central part in the artist’s output, serving as a metaphor for his method of working in which fusion and rhythm, improvisation and repetition, and density and harmony of sounds are turned into pictorial gestures. This monograph maps out a route through the whole of Albert Oehlen’s production, from his best-known works to less familiar ones and from the 1980s to the present day, with reproductions of paintings in the Pinault Collection and other major private collections and international museums.

Description: Roma: Artemide, 2018. 24cm., pbk., 200pp. illus.

Summary: Pat Passlof (1928–2011) was a distinguished painter in the abstract expressionist tradition, who studied with Willem de Kooning and was active in New York's downtown art community from the 1950s to her death. Passlof was also a teacher. Passionate and opinionated, she taught at Richmond College, CUNY, Staten Island from 1972 to 1983, and at the College of Staten Island from 1983 until the year before her death in 2011. Passlof was a brilliant writer, and continued her teachings in letters to students. David Jacobsen Loncle was one of Passlof’s students, and a close friend. In the course of gathering material for a book on Passlof, he assembled a group of her letters to young painters commenting on their practice, which the Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation has now published as a small clothbound book. The letters are accompanied by a group of nine drawings Passlof made in the late 1940s and early ‘50s.

Summary: The first monograph on the art of the celebrated French poet, painter and philosopher Eugénie Paultre (born 1979), Outline presents 80 of Paultre’s recent abstract paintings and drawings, created in 2016 and 2017. A master of chromatic tension, Paultre carefully applies vertical lines of colors—ranging from clusters of somber blues and blacks to warm combinations of oranges, reds and yellows—that accumulate into powerfully meditative prismatic works suggesting a variety of emotional tones, as well as painterly precedents from Paul Klee and Agnes Martin to Etel Adnan. This clothbound volume features an introductory text by Emmanuel Daydé and notes by Paultre in both English and French. Among Paultre's previous publications are Winter (Post-Apollo Press, 2014).

Title: Nel segno di Leonardo : La Tavola Doria. Dagli Uffizi al Castello di Poppi
Author: Piroci Branciaroli, Alberta (ed)
Price: $55.00
ISBN: 9788859618874
Record created on 06/11/2018
Description: Firenze: Polistampa, 2018. 31cm., hardcover, 184pp. illus., most in color. Exhibition held at Castello di Poppi, Arezzo.

Title: Miraculous Encounters: PONTORMO from Drawing to Painting
Author: Edelstein, Bruce ; Davide Gasparotto
Price: $40.00
ISBN: 9781606065891
Record created on 04/23/2018
Description: Los Angeles: Getty Publications, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 160pp. illus. Exhibition held at Galleria degli Uffizi Florence (then to the Morgan Library & Museum, New York).

Summary: This catalogue brings together a small but important group of preparatory drawings and finished paintings that center on Pontormo's great masterpiece, The Visitation, one of the most moving and mesmerizing works by the artist. The Visitation represents the intense moment of encounter between the Virgin Mary and her cousin Elizabeth, who reveal to each other that both are pregnant. The painting is presented--for the first time--along with its highly finished preparatory drawing, which is squared for transfer to the larger surface of the panel. The combination of rigorous research and gorgeous reproductions reveals the painter's creative process as never before. Other acclaimed paintings, including Portrait of a Halberdier and Portrait of Carlo Neroni, will also be shown alongside their preparatory drawings. Readers will encounter Pontormo both as a religious painter and a painter of portraits, in this original and nuanced account of the celebrated artist.

Title: SUELLEN ROCCA : Drawings
Author: Kron, Cat
Price: $35.00
ISBN: 9781944929121
Record created on 09/11/2018
Description: New York: Matthew Marks Gallery, 2018. 27cm., pbk., 84pp., 36 illus.

Summary: Suellen Rocca (born 1943) is perhaps best known for the work she made as a member of the Hairy Who, a group of six Chicago artists who exhibited together from 1966 to 1969. This book presents, for the first time, 30 works on paper made between 1981 and 2017. Building on the unique graphic vocabulary and innovative compositions of her 1960s work, these drawings represent a turn toward imagery she describes as "more internal." Animals, trees and unclassifiable creatures are placed in densely patterned settings that carry a genuine emotional charge. In the book’s essay, Cat Kron notes Rocca’s "increased attention to the unconcious," tracing parallels between the artist’s "anxious imaginings" and the automatic drawing of the Surrealists. As Rocca puts it, "I just begin, and the drawing is a journey between me and the marks on the paper".

Title: ALEXIS ROCKMAN : Wallace's Line
Author: Castelli, Jean-Christophe
Price: $100.00
ISBN: 9780979793677
Record created on 09/11/2018
Description: Aspen: Baldwin Gallery, 2018. 29cm., hardcover, 75p., 29 color illus.

Summary: In Wallace's Line, the acclaimed New York–based painter Alexis Rockman (born 1962) celebrates the life, ideas and influence of a forgotten founder of the theory of evolution, the Welsh scientist Arthur Russel Wallace, through a series of incandescent and brilliantly executed paintings and watercolors. The eponymous "line" refers to a demarcation between the fauna of Australia and Asia, and Rockman's paintings abound with these animals that struggle for survival on either line of that border. The works are reproduced in the reference style of Victorian explorers' folios, evoking the excitement those adventurers inspired in the popular imagination; likewise reflecting the world of its subject, the cover features a splendid Victorian-style printed gilt cover with marbled endpapers on the inside.

Title: Pink : The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color
Author: Steele, Valerie (et al)
Price: $50.00
ISBN: 9780500022269
Record created on 08/22/2018
Description: London: Thames and Hudson, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 208pp., 120 color illus. Exhibition held at Fashion Institute of Technology, New York.

Summary: Today, with the advent of “millennial pink,” the color formerly associated with Barbie has acquired a new identity. Nor is this the first time the symbolism of pink has been radically transformed. In collaboration with a major exhibition at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, curator and fashion historian Valerie Steele explores the history and significance of pink in fashion, art, and culture from the eighteenth century to the present. Steele and her co-authors tell the whole story of this controversial color, emphasizing how its meanings changed throughout the centuries and across the globe, in cultures as diverse as France, India, Japan, Mexico, and the United States. In eighteenth-century France, men and women alike wore pink, which was a fashionably “new” color. A century later, however, pink had become feminized and eroticized in the West. Pink is beautifully illustrated, with images of stunning pink fashions given context by photographs, advertisements, and works of art. It features essays by scholars across the disciplines, giving readers access to a wealth of research into subjects as diverse as Hollywood movies and the symbolism of the pink triangle. This book will appeal to those interested in fashion and culture, as well as those who love pink.

Title: Masterpieces of French Faience: Selections from the Sidney R. Knafel Collection
Author: Vignon, Charlotte
Price: $24.95
ISBN: 9781911282310
Record created on 05/06/2018
Description: London: Giles, in association with The Frick Collection, New York, 2018. 21cm., hardcover, 72pp., 88 color illus. Exhibition catalogue.

Summary: A feat of great technical achievement, French faience was introduced to Lyon in the second half of the sixteenth century by skilled Italian immigrants: mdash;the French word "faience" deriving from the northern Italian city of Faenza. Over the next two centuries, production spread throughout the provinces of metropolitan France. The fine decoration of French faience draws inspiration from multiple sources--Italian maiolica, Asian porcelain, and even contemporary engravings. The forms of its platters, bowls, plates, and ewers derive mostly from European ceramics and silver. This complex interplay of influences comes together in works of great originality. The Knafel Collection of French faience, the finest in private hands, includes outstanding examples of Nevers, Rouen, Moustiers, Moulins, and Marseilles production from the late sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth century. The quality of these masterpieces almost obscures the fact that French faience was essentially a provincial art, largely patronized and commissioned by a local aristocracy and made far from the centres of political power in Versailles and Paris. In this new volume, Charlotte Vignon traces the history of French faience, offering detailed discussions of key centers of production. Illustrated with more than seventy examples, this valuable resource testifies to the creativity and beauty of an engagingly innovative tradition.
