Summary: Diana, goddess of the moon and of hunting, played a very important role in European courts and in the processes of appropriating and updating the ancient mythological apparatuses that run through them. It was under this tutelary deity that, in the mid-seventeenth century, the Venaria Reale was built as a «palace of leisure and hunting» in the circuit of the royal Savoy residences. Summary: Considered a masterpiece by Roberto Longhi, something comparable to no less than the Sistine Chapel or the Studiolo of Isabella d’Este, the frescoes painted in the Camera di San Paolo in Parma by Antonio Allegri, called Correggio, illustrate the memory of a dream, between anagrams and rebuses. Title: Des jardins & des livres
Author: Jakob, Michael ; Jacques Berchtold (eds)
Price: $100.00
ISBN: 9782940563333
Record created on 02/08/2018
Description: Geneve: Metis Presses, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 496pp. prof. illus. Exhibition held at Fondation Bodmer, Geneve. French text.

Summary: The exhibition invites visitors to discover a major cultural phenomenon: the constant interchange between garden and book, and within book and garden. Reference will be made to Eden, epic gardens, the purgatory garden, the gardens of Venus and the Virgin Mary Garden, and to Poliphilo’s Strife of Love in a Dream as a pattern book for European gardens. Orlando Furioso makes up the subtext for the Gardens of Bomarzo; a key passage of Paradise Lost will be the aesthetic point of origin of the English Garden while Goethe’s Elective Affinities and garden visions, dreams and projects of great authors will be dealt with. Structured as a place to leisurely walk through, the exhibition opens up the fascinating world of the garden represented in books as a physical place and an intellectual construct. From ancient Babylon to today’s world, the exhibition presents, from a diachronic perspective, the most important documents reflecting the ever-present interest in gardens through time, national traditions and genres such as epics, poetry, prose, scientific theories, or manuals. Present as well is the success of the “beautiful garden book” as a novelty and capstone of the art of the book; among those are the one’s noted for their exceptional workmanship, introducing existing gardens or garden projects, as well as unfairly forgotten books, such as the Fruits Walls Improved by the Swiss mathematician, natural philosopher, and inventor Nicolas Fatio de Duillier.

Title: Girl with Dead Bird : Intercultural Observations
Author: Mühleis, Volkmar
Price: $29.50
ISBN: 9789462701373
Record created on 02/28/2018
Description: Leuven: Leuven University Press, 2018. 22cm., hardcover, 200pp., 7 illus.

Summary: The portrait we have come to call Little Girl with Dead Bird is an enigma. On the one hand, we hardly know anything about this sixteenth-century masterpiece. But even so, on the other hand, the picture fascinates viewers to this day. This painting's indeterminate yet compelling status provides Volkmar Mühleis grounds to look beyond its historical significance and to explore its anthropological scope as well, from an intercultural perspective and, moreover, against the backdrop of its complex of themes concerning life and death. To do so, Mühleis returns to the conceptual premises that frame the relationship between the history of art and the anthropology of images, along with those that juxtapose Western and Eastern philosophies.

Title: San Lorenzo in Verona : Storia e restauri
Author: Passuello, Angelo
Price: $36.75    Original Price: $52.50
ISBN: 9788883149238
Record created on 09/06/2017
Description: Caselle di Sommacampagna: Cierre, 2017. 28cm., pbk., 304pp. prof. illus.

Summary: This volume brings together the results of important studies and consequent conservation interventions carried out on works by Raphael from the period from 1508 to 1520. The documentation gathered and discussed during two study days specifically organised in 2014, recounts the artistic journey of the master of Urbino in the last decade of his life, and underlines various fundamental aspects such as technical choices and experiments, stylistic consistency and expressive innovations. The themes considered include the management and activity of the workshop, the evolution of the Raphaelesque technique in the Vatican Rooms, the restorations and paintings in Capodimonte and the Prado, and the study of his production technique. The comprehensive colour photo accompaniment, gathered in a substantial "atlas", offers splendid reproductions of Raphael's works, with previously unpublished full-page details and comparative images, as well as x-rays and reflectographic images, preparatory drawings and cartoons. The volume ends with a detailed specific reference biography for students and scholars.

Demnach gingen diese Altaraufsätze aus der Kooperation der jeweils gleichen Bildschnitzer mit wechselnden Malern hervor. Title: JAN BAPTIST WEENIX & JAN WEENIX : The Paintings. Volume 1: A Story of Versaility, Success and Bankruptcy in Seventeenth-Century Hollland. Volume 2: Master of the Dutch Hunting Still Life
Author: Van Wagenberg-Ter Hoeven, Anke A
Price: $115.00
ISBN: 9789462621596
Record created on 04/26/2018
Description: Zwolle: Waanders, 2018. 2 vols. 27 x 21cm., hardcover, slipcase, ca. 800pp. prof. illus.

Summary: Jan Baptist Weenix & Jan Weenix: the paintings, by Anke A. Van Wagenberg-Ter Hoeven, is the result of art historical research on the work of the 17th-century Dutch artist Jan Baptist Weenix (1621-1659) and his son Jan Weenix (1641-1719). Works by both these artists can be seen in all major museums with holdings of Dutch and Flemish paintings. This book fills a gap in art history and throws new light on the appreciation of Dutch art. Since 2004, hundreds of paintings have been documented as either Weenix I or Weenix II. For centuries, attributions had been confused because of the two artists’ similar subject choices and (at least for a time) similar style. Following the death of his father (and teacher), Jan gradually changed his style to conform to the more courtly taste of the late 17th and early 18th century. This first ever published monograph on Jan Baptist Weenix and his son Jan Weenix includes over 500 paintings.
