Description: Mit Beiträgen von Justus Lange. Hildesheim: Olms, 2009. 30cm., hardcover, 847pp. with 111 color, 2257 b&w illus. Publisher's summary: The hitherto largely overlooked collection of paintings in the City Museum in Braunschweig owes its existence primarily to the generous gifts of local citizens. The original core of the collection was formed by the acquisitions of the Brauschweiger Kunstverein, founded in 1832 with one of its aims being to found a gallery of contemporary painting. The emphasis was on landscapes and genre paintings from Düsseldorf and Munich schools as well as portraits and city views. Important milestones in the growth of the collection include the bequests of Franziska von Reinike, Amalie Löbbecke, Hermann Heydenreich and the collection of Franz Lucas. In the 20th century the Museum acquired many works by painters with a wide reputation such as Carl Buchheister, Walter Dexel, Leo von König and Max Peiffer Watenphul alongside works by artists from the School of Fine Arts, while the collection of views of Braunschweig continued to grow. Today the collection comprises some 2,200 paintings, oil studies, pastels and gouaches which are fully documented in this volume with illustrations, many in colour. The catalogue also lists those pictures which are no longer owned by the museum whether due to wartime losses, disposals or other unknown reasons. Several indexes and an comprehensive bibliography complete this reference work, the first complete catalogue in book form of the collection of paintings in the City Museum in Braunschweig.
