Description: Miami: Institute of Contemporary Art (distr.) Duke University Press, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 200pp., 135 color illus. Exhibition held at ICA Miami.

Summary: One of the great conceptual artists of the twenty-first century, Terry Adkins (1953–2014) was renowned for his pioneering work across mediums, from sculpture, drawing, and site-specific installation to photography, video, and performance. Terry Adkins: Infinity is Less Than One accompanies the first institutional posthumous exhibition of Adkins's sculptural production. While Adkins is often recognized for his musical and performative practice, this exhibition focuses on his complex memorials and monuments to historical figures. The exhibition showcases four of his major series, dedicated to four distinct figures: Bessie Smith, John Brown, Zora Neale Hurston, and Jimi Hendrix. These series are presented alongside a group of early sculptures to reveal the development of the Adkins's mature practice. The exhibition highlights Adkins's crucial contributions to sculpture and to cultural protest, featuring major works that have not been viewed in decades. It explores significant periods and influences in Adkins's career, beginning with transitional hand-wrought sculptures and continuing with his major immersive installations. His often elegiac and always resonant objects challenge dominant historical narratives and prompt a rethinking of ways of being and moving in the world that are shaped by the legacies of displacement and the sociability and community that happen despite it. Adkins's work also enlarges the historical legacies of the postwar avant-garde while reminding us of the immaterial legacies that are passed on through ritual and sound.

Description: Paris: Mare et Martin, 2018. 26cm., pbk., 176pp. illus. Exhibition held at Musée de La Cour d’Or - Metz.

Summary: Présentée au musée de La Cour d’Or - Metz Métropole, l’exposition Splendeurs du Christianisme.

Title: AFRO
Author: Rylands, Philip (ed)
Price: $112.00
ISBN: 9788899534608
Record created on 08/28/18
Description: Firenze: Forma Edizioni, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 276pp. illus. Exhibition catalogue. English text.

Summary: Catalogue of the first retrospective of Afro Libio Basaldella, better known as Afro. The exhibition, at the Tornabuoni Art Gallery in Paris, shows works ranging from the 1930s to the 1970s. It includes a room completely dedicated to the preparatory sketches for his large fresco,The Garden of Hope, created in 1958 for the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. His link with American Abstract Expressionism was analysed in the catalogue by Barbara Drudi of the Accademia di Firenze, and thanks to the curatorship of Philip Rylands. Afro Libio Basaldella (Udine, 1912 - Zurich, 1976) was perhaps the most renowned member of the Friuli Avant-garde Movement, which influenced his approach towards a more Expressionist sense of painting that had always been based on traditional Venetian Colourism. In the 1940s, Afro joined the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti, and following a visit to the United States, he joined the Gruppo degli Otto, with whom he exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1952. Although in certain aspects his style seemed similar to American Action Painting, his harmonious tonal modulation and later research into abstract shapes and forms produced intellectually sophisticated results.

Record created on 07/06/18
Description: Vancouver: Figure 1 Publishing, In partnership with the National Gallery of Canada, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 256pp. prof. illus. Exhibition catalogue.

Summary: Laurent Amiot was born in Quebec City in 1764, and after a first apprenticeship stayed in Paris for five years, just before the French Revolution, to perfect his artistic training. He returned to his hometown in the spring of 1787, acquainted with the latest European stylistic trends, mastering the art of composition and possessing a solid technique. He opened a workshop in the Old City the following year, inaugurating a fruitful practice that spans five decades. This illustrated catalog, containing some 80 works on display, is published on the occasion of the presentation of the first retrospective devoted to the artist. Three chapters highlight the fundamental role of Amiot’s contribution to the development of art in Canada. The first two scrutinize his training, his practice, the operation of the workshop, the role of the collaborators and relationships with patrons. The third analyzes the work, trying to advance knowledge of the society in which it blossomed.

Description: Vienna: Kunsthistorisches Museum, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 176pp. prof. illus. German-English texts.

Summary: In 2012, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna initiated a new seriesof exhibitions for which remarkable creative individuals are invited to present their own personal selections of objects drawn from the museum’s historical collections. The museum’s collections number more than four million objects, and span a period of five thousand years. The first exhibition, titled The Ancients Stole All Our Great Ideas, was selected and curated by the painter and draughtsman Ed Ruscha. This was followed in 2016 by the exhibition During the Night, selected and curated by the British ceramicist and writer Edmund de Waal.

The third instalment of the series, has been selected and curated by the filmmaker Wes Anderson and his partner, the writer and illustrator Juman Malouf. With assistancefrom the museum’s staff of curators and conservators, Anderson and Malouf have assembled more than 400 objects drawn from all fourteen of the museum’s historical collections. Among them are Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities, Old Master paintings, selections from the Kunstkammer and the Imperial Treasury, items from the Imperial Armoury, Coin Collection, and Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, as well as pieces from the Theatermuseum, the Weltmuseum, the Imperial Carriage Museum, and Schloss Ambras Innsbruck. A handful of special guests from the Natural History Museum are also included. Particular attention was given to the museum’s storage: more than 350 of the objects have been brought from depots, with many of them on public display for the very first time. The result is titled Spitzmaus Mummy in a Coffin and other Treasures. The gathering and arrangement of these treasures – from the earliest, a necklace of ceramic beads strung together in Ancient Egypt, to the most recent, a wooden monkey carved in Indonesia almost 5,000 years later – suggest the spectacular breadth, depth, history and complexity of the Kunsthistorisches Museum’s collections.

Description: Petersberg: Imhof, 2018. 27cm., pbk., 128pp., 60 color illus. Exhibition held at Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum Aachen. German text.

Summary: What does the living room look like of an art lover who collects "Old Mas ters? Does it have a Brueghel hanging over the sofa? And perhaps a Brouwer right next to the TV arm chair? Does a passionate collector of the arts even watch TV? The new exhibition series "Chambre Privee" will offer a loose succession of glimpses into such private spheres - as pop-up living rooms featuring original paintings and using photo canvases to capture the ambience and atmosphere of the art collector's home. The series of exhibitions will kick off with the living room of a private collector whose collection consists almost exclusively of Flemish and Dutch paintings. His initial inspi ration to collect came from a still life exhibition in Munster in 1979, which left such a lasting impression on him that he gave up his former passion for hunting. From then on - much to the delight of his wife - the hunting trophies on the walls at home gave way to paintings. The result is the living room as it looks today: a walk-in still life and, at the same time, a realisation of the 91-year-old collector's vision. His successful hunts for high-quality masterpieces have brought home works by the likes of Jan Brueghel the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, Frans Snyders, Adriaen Brouwer and Paul Bril.

His very first acquisition was a still life by the Dutch painter Jan van Os (1744 - 1808). "Quality was always our top priority. But first we had to work out what exactly quality means", says the collector. "My wife and I visited museums all over the world. Only through the act of looking can you sharpen your eye for quality. Numerous acquisitions followed - especially during the 1980s and '90s - all of them of the highest quality and with close connections to each other. For example, Jan Brueghel the Elder's "Seascape with Tomb of the Scipios" hangs flanked by works of his artist colleagues Joos de Momper and Paul Bril. Frans Snyders, the specialist for hunting and animal still lifes, painted at least 60 hunting scenes and animals for Peter Paul Rubens. Rubens, in turn, a passionate art collector himself, was the documented owner of 17 paintings by Adriaen Brouwer. And so, over the years, an eminently harmonious art collection evolved which now - for the very first time - the general public is also able to see and appreciate. The exhibition will be presented in two parts: first the Flemish paintings will come to Aachen; then, in early 2020, the Dutch paintings will be following.

Title: I Macchiaioli
Author: Bartolena, Simona
Price: $45.00
ISBN: 9788857239736
Record created on 09/14/18
Description: Milano: Skira, 2018. 28cm., pbk., 104pp., 85 color illus. Exhibition held at Palazzo Meridiana, Genova.

Title: BARTOLOME BERMEJO
Author: Molina Figueras, Joan (et al)
Price: $55.00
ISBN: 9788484805090
Record created on 10/09/18
Description: Madrid: Museo nacional del Prado, 2018. 30cm., pbk., 248pp. prof. illus. Exhibition catalogue. English edition.

Summary: Bartolomé Bermejo (about 1440–about 1501) is one of the most surprising and fascinating painters of the fifteenth century in the Iberian Peninsula. Adapting the new pictorial model established by the Flemish masters to his own needs, he combined a painstaking naturalistic technique with an extraordinary ability to reinterpret traditional themes and compositions. These skills are apparent in the nearly thirty works that make up his small but select corpus, which have been brought together for the first time in an exceptional exhibition organised by the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. This book, published on the occasion of the exhibition, presents the results of the research carried out over a period of more than three years by a group of specialists. Their work in archives, libraries and restoration centres and, of course, their first-hand examination of the pictures themselves have enabled them not only to put together a new catalogue raisonné for this Spanish artist but also to reveal new aspects of his personality, painting technique and iconographic contributions. In order to appeal to a wide and varied audience ranging from specialists to art lovers, the texts are written in a rigorous but engaging style and are accompanied by a rich assortment of attractive illustrations that attest to Bermejo’s mastery as a painter. In short, the book is designed to help readers learn about and enjoy the work of a truly brilliant painter who is still little known to the public at large. The texts are by Joan Molina Figueras, Carl Brandon Strehlke, Javier Ibáñez Fernández and Alberto Velasco Gonzàlez.

Title: Naissance de la sculpture gothique : Saint-Denis, Paris, Chartres (1135-1150)
Author: Berne, Damien ; Philippe Plagnieux
Price: $67.50
ISBN: 9782711870776
Record created on 10/04/18
Description: Paris: Musees nationaux, 2018. 29cm., hardcover, 271pp. prof. illus. Exhibition held at musée de Cluny, Paris. French text.

Summary: While a new art of building was supplanting Romanesque architecture, its associated sculptural style was spreading throughout the Île-de-France region, between around 1135 and 1150. This early Gothic sculpture was not limited to the emblematic portals adorned with column-statues, as new models circulated and new forms of expression were explored. An unprecedented virtuosity in the cutting and carving of stone allowed for infinite variations on ornamental themes shared with illuminations and stained-glass windows, wonderfully illustrating refined detail work, a sense for narration and a marked taste for the monumental. This represented a clear break from the earlier Romanesque traditions of the Paris region. Thanks to this exceptional assembly of column-statues from the Chartres Royal Portal and vestiges of those from the western portals of the Suger Abbey in Saint-Denis, as well as other sculptural testimonials of this period’s abundant experimentation and inspiration (the Sainte-Anne Portal of Notre-Dame de Paris, the Saint-Denis Cloister, etc.), visitors will be able to observe – some nine centuries later – the birth of a whole new artform.

Title: Art for a New Understanding: Native Voices, 1950s to Now
Author: Besaw, Mindy N. (et al)
Price: $49.95
ISBN: 9781682260807
Record created on 08/01/18
Description: Fayetteville: University of Arkansas Press, 2018. 31cm., hardcover, 200p. illus. Exhibition held at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville.

Summary: Art for a New Understanding, an exhibition from Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art opening this October, seeks to radically expand and reposition the narrative of American art since 1950 by charting a history of the development of contemporary Indigenous art from the United States and Canada, beginning when artists moved from more regionally-based conversations and practices to national and international contemporary art contexts. This accompanying book documents and expands on the histories and themes of this exciting exhibition. This fully illustrated volume includes essays by art historians and historians and reflections by the artists included in the collection. Also included are key contemporary writings—from the 1950s onward—by artists, scholars, and critics, investigating the themes of transculturalism and pan-Indian identity, traditional practices conducted in radically new ways, displacement, forced migration, shadow histories, the role of personal mythologies as a means to reimagine the future, and much more. As both a survey of the development of Indigenous art from the 1950s to the present and a consideration of Native artists within contemporary art more broadly, Art for a New Understanding expands the definition of American art and sets the tone for future considerations of the subject. It is an essential publication for any institution or individual with an interest in contemporary Native American art, and an invaluable resource in ongoing scholarly considerations of the American contemporary art landscape at large.

Title: Il Montefeltro e l'oriente islamico. Urbino 1430-1550. Il Palazzo Ducale tra occidente e oriente
Author: Bruschettini, Alessandro
Price: $57.50
ISBN: 9788863735772
Record created on 09/07/18
Description: Genova: Sagep, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 352pp. prof. illus. Exhibition held at Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, Urbino.

Title: Stadium : A Building that renders the Image of a City
Author: Celedon, Alejandra ; Stephannie Fell (eds)
Price: $39.00
ISBN: 9783038601081
Record created on 07/20/18
Description: Zurich: Park Books, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 224pp., 52 color, 59 b&w illus. English-Spanish text.

Summary: “Stadium” is the theme chosen for the Chilean Pavilion at the Sixteenth International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. The intent is to capture the story of the National Stadium in Santiago—both a building and a city for a day. On September 29, 1979, 40,000 families filled the stadium’s seats; around 250,000 people from all over the country’s capital. The occasion was the signing of documents that transformed these people into proprietors. Prior to the event, the press circulated a list of names of the people summoned to the stadium — beneficiaries of “Operación Sitio,” a public housing program — together with a plan that showed the stadium subdivided into boroughs. This book tells the dual story of the stadium and the exhibition at the Chilean Pavilion, interwoven with the Architecture Exhibition’s broad theme of “Freespace.” The book is organized into four chapters, each featuring short essays and illustrations, including drawings, plans, and photographs. In the making of the exhibition, the stadium’s floorplan no longer demarcates the stands but visualizes another city marginalized from its center. Each section is extruded as a block, engraved with the urban fabric of the fragment of the city from which it originates. A timely contribution to a continuing conversation, Stadium will be welcomed by architects, urban planners, and those who provide housing. (La Biennale di Venezia - 16. Summary: This sumptuous exhibition of Islamic art is curated by Giovanni Curatola and organised by the Uffizi in partnership with the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover the knowledge, exchange, dialogue and mutual influence that existed between the arts of East and West. It is the result of an international scholarly advisory board which has been working with dedication for two years to select the exhibits and to prepare the catalogue with essays rich in scientific and historical research, designed to illustrate the extremely important role that Florence played in interfaith and intercultural exchange between the 15th and the early 20th centuries, not to mention Florence's age-old interest in the Islamic world. The leading role in this joint venture by the Uffizi and the Bargello is played by Islamic art with its superb carpets, its damascened acquamaniles and vases, its enamelled glass, its rock crystal, its ivory and its lustreware.

Description: Dallas: Meadows Museum, Ediciones El Viso, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 162pp. illus. Exhibition catalogue.

Summary: Focuses on Salvador Dalí's influences, iconography, technique, and materials throughout the most productive period of his career. Research undertaken upon the Meadows Museum's 2014 acquisition of Salvador Dalí's painting The Fish Man (L'homme poisson, 1930) opened doors to areas within Dalí's 1930s oeuvre worthy of further study; foremost among them, Dalí's propensity for painting on a small scale. Dalí Poetics of the Small, 1929-1936, is the first exhibition on the artist to focus solely on his small-format works. While examples of small-format paintings are present throughout Dalí's career, the eight years under examination - 1929 to 1936, arguably the apex of Dalí's artistic career - witnessed sustained attention to this format; nearly half of the approximately 200 known paintings completed by the artist during this time measure 13 inches or smaller. This exhibition, which brings together a representative selection of small-format paintings from this period, considers the potential sources of inspiration for these minute masterpieces. Of particular interest is Dalí's early, and lasting, admiration for the work of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). Photography, as well as photomontage and collage, are also considered as influences. The project also includes a technical study of a selection of these paintings by Claire Barry, director of conservation at the Kimbell Art Museum, which continues the work she first performed on The Fish Man three years ago. This research aims to provide a better understanding of Dalí's artistic technique and working process during the 1930s, which is considered in correlation to the artist's small-format paintings.

Contents: Poetic Facts and Destabilized Reality: Dali's Snapshots of the Subconscious; In Pursuit of the 'Spectre of Vermeer': Dalí and the Painter of Delft; Dalí through the Magnifying Glass; Catalogue; Appendix of Technical Images.

Description: Milano: Silvana, 2018. 28cm., pbk., 208pp., 80 illus. Exhibition held at Gallerie d’Italia – Palazzo Zevallos, Napoli.

Description: Foligno: Aguaplano, 2018. 24cm., pbk., 167pp., 55 color plates. Exhibition held at San Pietro, Perugia.

Summary: La mostra vuole gettare luce sull'enorme patrimonio artistico del Seicento in Umbria, documentandone in maniera eccellente la ricchezza e la varietà.

Description: Perugia: Quattroemme, 2018. 24cm., pbk., 336pp. prof. illus., most in color. Exhibition catalogue (Montefalco, Trevi, Spoleto, Scheggino). Italian text.

Summary: The exhibition includes about 70 artworks, mainly extraordinary early fourteenth century gold backgrounds and sculptures, from prestigious domestic and international collections at four exhibition venues: in Trevi the Museo di San Francesco, in Spoleto the Museo Diocesano - Basilica di Sant'Eufemia and the Museo Nazionale del Ducato, in Montefalco the San Francesco Museum Complex. The Spazio Arte Valcasana in Scheggino will be featuring an exciting overview on the pattern of churches, parishes, hermitages and abbeys in Umbria, Marche, Abruzzo and Lazio where artists inspired by Giotto worked between the end of the thirteenth and the early fourteenth century, connected by means of organised routes which will allow for the discovery of enchanting locations and works of art.

It is worth mentioning the two amazing altar frontals from the state rooms of His Holiness the Pope, both of them from Montefalco, masterfully restored for the occasion in the Vatican Museum workshops; or the extraordinary connection between the Tryptic with the Coronation of the Virgin by the Maestro di Cesi and the Crucifix with Christus triumphans, both of them painted for the monastery of Santa Maria della Stella in Spoleto, currently separated, one being at the Marmottan Monet Museum in Paris and the other at the Museo del Ducato in Spoleto. For the first time since the beginning of the nineteenth century they will be on display together.

Between the thirteenth and the fourteenth century, Umbria was the venue of a major medieval artistic revolution. This exceptional exhibition presents a selection of artistic culture from this period. Its reconstruction of the corpus of artworks by anonymous masters, including the Maestro delle Palazze, the Maestro di Sant'Alò, Maestro di San Felice di Giano, Maestro di Cesi, Maestro di San Ponziano, Maestro della Croce di Trevi, Maestro della Croce di Visso, Maestro di Fossa, most of them both painters and sculptors, sheds light on a painting academy which is not very well known, in spite of its great cultural interest.

Description: Paris: Lienart, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 608pp., 800 illus. Exhibition held at Musee du Louvre, Paris.

For the first time in 160 years, the exhibition will provide a comprehensive overview of the 19th century’s largest private collection, whose 10,000 exhibits—archaeological items, paintings, sculptures, and “modern” objets d’art—included such masterpieces as the Sarcophagus of the Spouses and Paolo Uccello’s Battle of San Romano. Addressing the personality and tastes of Giampietro Campana, the way he brought together this truly extraordinary ensemble, and its ultimate dispersal throughout Europe, the exhibition will also highlight the collection’s seminal role in the affirmation of Italian culture as the Italian nation gradually took shape in the course of the 19th century. Thus it will illustrate the collection’s significance in terms of cultural awareness in Italy and Europe as a whole.

Description: Napoli: Arte'm, 2018. 30cm., pbk., 312pp., ca. 300 illus. Exhibition held at Scuderie del Quirinale, Roma.

Description: Perugia: EFFE, 2018. 30cm., pbk., 336pp., 202 color illus. Exhibition held at Palazzo Ducale, Gubbio.

Summary: Clinton Hill was a multitalented artist who was a Renaissance man of the abstract. Neither cubist, futurist, minimalist, abstractionist, or constructivist, he was all at once. This book and the exhibition it accompanies (on view at the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia January 6–March 19, 2018) constitute a survey of his career, from printmaker to painter, from pulp-paper pioneer to lyrical wall constructions. Hill’s biographer Susan Larsen referred to his “effortless fluency” of craft, from which his distinctive visual vocabulary takes voice and which these works demonstrate.

Description: Paris: Paris Musees, 2018. 28cm., pbk., 144pp., 76 illus., most in color. Exhibition held at Petit Palais, Paris.

Title: Say it with Flowers! Viennese Flower Painting from Waldmüller to Klimt
Author: Johannsen, Rolf H. ; Stella Rollig (eds)
Price: $60.00
ISBN: 9783791357928
Record created on 05/07/18
Description: Munich-New York: Prestel, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 216pp., 200 color illus. Exhibition held at Belvedere, Vienna. English text.

Summary: The first heyday of flower painting was in the Biedermeier period with its magnificent arrangements of flowers. It surged again at the end of the century, especially in the work of the women artists Olga Wisinger-Florian and Marie Egner. The genre opened a way for women into the art world. And finally Vienna’s modernist artists, like Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, included floral motifs in their work in their own highly unique ways. Flower pictures reveal much more than the history of artistic styles. They tell of social change, the delight in exotic plants and native Alpine flora, the splendour of the Ringstrasse era and the fragility of humankind. The exhibition encompasses works from a period spanning from the late eighteenth through to the early twentieth century and, in addition to paintings, also includes porcelain and sculpture. A selection of contemporary artworks further enriches the show. Featuring works by Jan van Huysum, Rachel Ruysch, Josef Klieber, Joseph Nigg, Franz Xaver Petter, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Pauline von Koudelka-Schmerling, Rosalia Amon, Anton Romako, Hans Makart, Olga Wisinger-Florian, Tina Blau, Carl Schuch, Marie Egner, Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Michael Powolny, Egon Schiele, and Willem de Rooij.

Record created on 05/25/18
Description: New York: David Zwirner, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 152pp., 65 color illus. Exhibition held at Cleveland Museum of Art.

Summary: In a unique style that is both sensory and utopian, Yayoi Kusama's work-which spans paintings, performances, room-size presentations, sculptural installations, literary works, films, fashion, design and interventions within existing architectural structures-has transcended some of the most important art movements of the second half of the 20th century, including pop art and minimalism. As Roberta Smith wrote in the New York Times, "These paintings form a great big infinity room of their own, but one in which each part is also an autonomous work of art, its own piece of wobbly, handwrought infinity … their vitality is infectious." Yayoi Kusama: Festival of Life documents the artist's exhibition at David Zwirner's Chelsea location in New York in late 2017, featuring a selection of paintings from her iconic My Eternal Soul series, new large-scale flower sculptures, a polka-dotted environment and two Infinity Mirror Rooms. The monograph includes new scholarship on the artist by Jenni Sorkin, as well as a special foldout poster.

Author: Kwakkelstein, Michael ; Michel Plomp
Price: $39.50

Record created on 08/30/18
Description: Bussum: Thoth, in association with eylers Museum, Haarlem, 2018. 28cm., pbk., 224pp. illus. Exhibition catalogue. English text.

Summary: During his life Leonardo da Vinci, the very embodiment of the Renaissance ideal of the ‘uomo universale’, was famous for his unique ability to convincingly depict human emotions and personalities. Leonardo was fascinated by the expressiveness of the human face, whether deformed and ugly or beautiful and idealized, and particularly by the relation between its exterior and the interior mind. He had an obvious affinity with the ‘science’ of physiognomy – popular in his day – which claimed that the human face reflected the personality inside. One of the exhibition’s highlights is Leonardo’s 'Head of a Young Woman', sometimes called the Mona Lisa of drawings. The drawing is now on display in the Netherlands for the first time.

Description: Paris: Norma, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 176pp., 200 illus. Exhibition held at Petit Palais, Paris. French text.

Summary: Six months before he died in poverty and forgotten, Jean-Jacques Lequeu (1757-1826) donated one of the most singular and fascinating graphic oeuvres of his time to the French National Library. The set of several hundred drawings presented here in its entirety for the first time, is a testimonial to the solitary and obsessive downward spiral of an exceptional artist that goes well beyond the first steps of an architectural career. Using the precise technical tool represented by the geometric working drawing made in wash, which he filled with handwritten notes, Lequeu scrupulously described the monuments and imaginary factories that filled his imaginary landscapes, rather than carrying out projects. But this initiatory journey, which he made without leaving his studio and enriched with figures and narratives from his library, this pathway that led him from temple to bush, from artificial grotto to palace, from kiosk to subterranean labyrinth, resolved itself as a quest to find himself. To see everything and describe it all, systematically, from the animal to the organic, from fantasy and raw sex to the self portrait, became the mission he assigned to himself. As a typical representative of the artisanal class that tried, with the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, to rise socially and break free of the world of trades, but quickly became disenchanted when the new order and new hierarchies were built, Lequeu, the child of his century, the century of licentiousness and Anglo-Chinese gardens, nevertheless pursued an entirely free and singular path. Reduced to employment in a subordinate office, ignored by those in place, now far from his roots, but freed of social or academic pressure, he stalked his dreams with the obstinacy of a builder and without compromise.
