Summary: Developed during the mid-19th century in China, the bapo (or "eight brokens") painting genre combines ingeniously realistic depictions of antique documents, such as calligraphies, rubbings, paintings and pages from old books, sometimes alongside everyday contemporary ephemera, including advertisements, receipts and postmarked envelopes. Summary: At the start of the Dutch Golden Age, Rome was the centre of the world. Young painters from across Europe made their way to the Eternal City, where - so the rumour went - the painter Caravaggio had caused a revolution. A new realism in the art of painting, unparalleled drama, grand gestures and mysteries of light: everyone wanted to see it for themselves. Among them were the Utrecht painters Dirck van Baburen, Hendrick ter Brugghen and Gerard van Honthorst. During the heyday of European Caravaggism, between 1600-1630, some 2700 artists were listed in Rome, of which 572 were foreigners. They all visited the same churches and viewed the same collections. They conversed with each other, and of course they painted! And they painted the same themes, used the same sources of inspiration, but the works they produced were nonetheless very different. Utrecht, Caravaggio and Europe examines precisely these differences between the European followers of Caravaggio. By presenting the works on the basis of themes, it is immediately evident how each artist remained rooted in his own cultural background. Utrecht, Caravaggio and Europe brings the Rome of 1600 to 1630 to Utrecht. Presenting seventy masterpieces, this exhibition is the first to display the Utrecht Caravaggists alongside their European counterparts: the Italian painters Caravaggio, Bartolomeo Manfredi, Cecco da Caravaggio, Giovanni Antonio Galli (Lo Spadarino), Giovanni Serodine, Orazio Borgianni and Orazio Gentileschi, the Spaniard Jusepe de Ribera, the French Nicolas Régnier, Nicolas Tournier, Simon Vouet and Valentin de Boulogne, and the Flemish Gerard Seghers and Theodoor Rombouts. The exhibition comprises over sixty loan pieces, from museum and private collections across Europe and the United States, including the Vatican Museums, the Louvre (Paris), the Galleria degli Uffizi (Florence), the National Gallery of Art of London and the National Gallery of Art of Washington DC, but also from churches in Rome. The paintings by the Utrecht Caravaggists are so recognisably Dutch, because they took Caravaggio's realism one step further. Baburen and Ter Brugghen also painted the ugly sides of reality: monstrous noses, rotten teeth, dirty fingernails. Ter Brugghen even has the questionable honour of having painted the ugliest but also the most realistic baby in seventeenth century art. Gerard van Honthorst was very successful in Rome. Honthorst's invention of illuminating his scenes from a hidden, indirect source of light became so famous that he was nicknamed 'Gherardo delle Notti': Gerard of the Nights. Just like Dirck van Baburen, he received important commissions for altar pieces, and works by both artists were purchased by important collectors such as Cardinal Giustiniani, who was also a patron of Caravaggio. Their paintings were hung in the halls of his palazzo, next to those of the Italian, Flemish, French and Spanish painters. The exhibitions follows the three Utrecht artists on their Roman adventure, demonstrates how this affected their work, and displays their most accomplished pieces.

La tavola passò, attraverso diverse vicende ereditarie, in possesso di due nobili sorelle residenti a Fano. 1720 wurde der gelernte Stuckateur Andreas Gallasini (1681–1766) als Bauinspektor nach Fulda berufen. Ab 1728 gestaltete der gebürtige Schweizer als Hofbaumeister das Der 1681 in Lugano geborene Andreas Gallasini arbeitete bereits ab 1705 nördlich der Alpen, zunächst als Stuckateur und stieg bereits 1715 zum fürstlich-waldeckschen Bauinspektor auf. 1720 trat er in Fulda im Amt des Bauinspektors in Erscheinung und avancierte dort 1728 für gut 30 Jahre zum fürstlichen Baumeister. in den folgenden Jahren baute er nicht nur zahlreiche Sakralbauten im Fuldaer Umland, sondern realisierte im Zusammenwirken mit seinem Auftraggeber Fürstabt von Dalberg einige städtische, repräsentative Großbauten, die bis heute das repräsentative Gesicht der Residenzstadt Fulda prägen. Nicht zuletzt errichtete er auch auf dem Land zahlreiche Kirchen, Schlösser und Prachtbauten, die gleichfalls ortsprägend sind. Etwa 45 Bauten gehen auf Gallasini zurück. Um 1759 zog Gallasini nach Wetzlar, um von dort noch einmal, bereits hochbetagt, im Auftrag des Fürsten Hohenlohe Bartenstein als Baudirektor den Ausbau der Residenzanlage voranzutreiben. Er starb dort 1766 im Alter von 85 Jahren. Das Buch liefert nicht nur einführende Beiträge, sondern auch ein Werkverzeichnis der von Gallasini errichteten Bauten. After goldsmiths work, tapestries and embroideries were among the costliest art forms of the Middle Ages, due to their precious materials and the countless hours required to produce them. Whether hung on the wall or worn about the person, textiles provided a potent display of their owners' wealth and status. Their vivid decoration also provided the perfect backdrop for courtly pageants, royal ceremonies, and liturgical festivals. Even the quickest glance at late medieval paintings shows just how forcefully textiles shaped the visual texture of the occasions they depict. Though always the works of specialist craftsmen, in the later Middle Ages textiles were often made following designs supplied by the leading painters and designers of their age. Yet only a tiny fraction of what was made has survived. The fragility of the fabrics, light damage and insects, together with alterations of use, have made this material extremely rare. This catalogue includes thirty-six late medieval and Renaissance textiles, many published for the first time, that together span a period of almost two hundred years. They are organised by country, starting with otherwise unrecorded examples of 'opus anglicanum' made in English workshops between around 1400 and the eve of the Reformation. They are followed by textiles from France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Spain. Different materials and classes of textile are grouped together within each of these regional divisions. For instance, liturgical vestments and altar hangings sit side by side with sumptuous velvets and delicately embroidered tablecloths. Together, they encapsulate the incredible breadth of Europe's flourishing textile industries during this period. These paintings also reflect aesthetic and philosophical concepts of the time: the reproduction of new pictorial effects involving the control of the fall of light on the painting’s surface; the perception of the natural world as codified in classical texts; the paragone with sculpture; and the desire to produce eternal creations. While there have been some previous exhibitions of a general nature on this subject, the Museo del Prado has set out to offer an in-depth focus. This has firstly involved a study of the theories that stimulated its emergence, and secondly, an exploration of the origins of the technique, its relationship with the classical world and the pictorial procedures that were perfected by Sebastiano del Piombo, Titian and Daniele da Volterra in order to achieve different chromatic effects while making use of unconventional supports and creating works that have survived to the present day. The nature of the support and the close relationship established by the present research project with the classical tradition of polychrome stone has encouraged a collaboration with other disciplines, including natural history, geography and archaeology. This has allowed for a focus on how these works were made and a greater knowledge of them, reflected in different aspects of the exhibition. Firstly, through the inclusion of works from these different fields: classical Roman pieces and specimens of unworked stone, which help to provide a context for the selected paintings. Secondly, through a series of very specific studies undertaken using procedures employed in these different disciplines, the results of which are presented in the exhibition’s accompanying publication. The two works by Titian and the painting by the studio of the Bassanos in the Prado’s collection have undergone lengthy and complex restoration in which, thanks to the sponsorship of Fundación Iberdrola España, a number of specialists in different areas of restoration (paint, frames and supports) have taken part with the aim that visitors can fully appreciate the uniqueness of these works, executed in oil on supports both special and rarely encountered in the history of art.
