Title: JOSEF ALBERS : Life and Work
Author: Darwent, Charles
Price: $39.95
ISBN: 9780500519103
Record created on 03/06/2018
Description: London: Thames and Hudson, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 400pp. illus.

Summary: Drawing on extensive unpublished archival writings, documents, and illustrations, this is the first full-scale biography of one of the 20th-century’s great artists. In his accessible study of the “whole” Albers, Charles Darwent combats the fables while telling the fascinating story of an artist, friend, and intellectual. Among Albers’s unpublished papers are letters from friends John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra, and Eva Hesse, as well as fans and collectors ranging from the composer Virgil Thomson to the cartoonist Saul Steinberg. If his network of influence was surprisingly wide, so too, were his interests. He started life at the Bauhaus as a glass-maker and went on to create fonts, to run their famous wallpaper workshop, and to make furniture whose designs are still in production eighty years later. He pioneered the study of color at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, and chaired the design department at Yale University. While books have been written about Albers for specialist audiences, this new volume fulfills the clear need for a more general study.

Title: JOSEF ALBERS : Interaction
Author: Liesbrock, Heinz (ed)
Price: $40.00
ISBN: 9780300240832
Record created on 03/20/2018
Description: New Haven: Yale University Press, 2018. 29cm., hardcover, 304pp., 140 color illus. Exhibition held at Villa Hügel, Essen. English text.

Summary: Josef Albers (1888–1976) was one of the leading pioneers of 20th-century modernism: he was an extraordinary teacher, writer, painter, and color theorist, who is best known for the Homages to the Square (painted between 1950–76) and The Interaction of Color, published by Yale University Press in 1963. This generously illustrated overview of Albers’s work, accompanying the first major exhibition on the artist in more than thirty years, features all aspects of his long, creative career. Beginning with Albers's time at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, the publication follows the artist to America and describes major themes of his work there as well as the importance of his frequent travels to Mexico. Paintings, prints, furniture, household objects, works in glass, photographs, and pre-Columbian sculptures are beautifully reproduced and discussed by a team of experts. The juxtaposition of Renaissance sculptures and icons with paintings by Albers underlines the intellectual and spiritual dimensions of his art, and Albers’s influence on 1960s Minimalist art is also explored. Including a comprehensive biography, the book convincingly demonstrates how this great artist transformed modern design by using line, color, surface, and space to challenge the perception of the viewer.

Title: Sculpture and Coins : Margarete Bieber as Scholar and Collector
Author: Arnold-Biucchi, Carmen ; Martin Beckmann (eds)
Price: $30.00
ISBN: 9780674428379
Record created on 11/17/2013
Description: Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2018. 23cm., hardcover, 148pp. illus.

Summary: This volume addresses the question of the relation between sculpture and coins—or large statuary and miniature art—in the private and public domain. It originates in the Harvard Art Museums 2011 Ilse and Leo Mildenberg interdisciplinary symposium celebrating the acquisition of Margarete Bieber’s coin collection. The papers examine the function of Greek and Roman portraiture and the importance of coins for its identification and interpretation. The authors are scholars from different backgrounds and present case studies from their individual fields of expertise: sculpture, public monuments, coins, and literary sources. Sculpture and Coins also pays homage to the art historian Margarete Bieber (1879–1978) whose work on ancient theater and Hellenistic sculpture remains seminal. She was the first woman to receive the prestigious travel fellowship from the German Archaeological Institute and the first female professor at the University of Giessen. Dismissed by the Nazis, she came to the United States and taught at Columbia. This publication cannot answer all the questions: its merit is to reopen and broaden a conversation on a topic seldom tackled by numismatists and archaeologists together since the time of Bernard Ashmole, Phyllis Lehmann and Léon Lacroix.
Author: Becatti, Graziella
Price: $100.00
ISBN: 9789074461917
Record created on 10/04/2018
Description: Brussels: Institut Historique Belge de Rome, 2018. 26cm., pbk., 216pp., 60 color illus. Italian text.

Title: GIOVANNI BELLINI : The Art of Contemplation
Author: Grave, Johannes
Price: $120.00
ISBN: 9783791383972
Record created on 01/11/2018
Description: Munich-New York: Prestel, 2018. 38cm., hardcover, 288pp., 242 color illus.

Summary: Following the arc of Bellini’s career, from his early devotional paintings to his later, occasionally secular works, this book offers an in-depth appreciation of the Venetian master who dominated the Early Renaissance. Featuring nearly every extant Bellini work, as well as those of his contemporaries, this book brims with gorgeous Renaissance art. Author Johannes Grave focuses on some of the artist’s greatest works including Allegoria Sacra, the Brera Pietà, and the altarpiece of San Giobbe—to explore how Bellini excelled in tempera before mastering oil painting. Grave discusses how Bellini’s precise lines, his delicate facial expressions, and the subtle effects of light and shadow were used in his religious paintings as well as his portraiture and late mythological depictions. This book examines Bellini’s life, including his complex relationships with his father Jacopo, his brother Gentile, and his brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna. It considers the original contexts of Bellini’s works, and elucidates the ways in which these paintings were meant to be perceived. The book also links Bellini’s devotional paintings with the poetic creations of his pupil Giorgione. An important contribution to the scholarship of Renaissance art, this masterful book reaffirms Bellini’s status as one of Venice’s greatest painters.

Title: The 8 Brokens : Chinese Bapo Painting
Author: Berliner, Nancy
Price: $55.00
ISBN: 9780878468317
Record created on 06/19/2018
Description: Boston: Museum of Fine Arts, 2018. 27cm., hardcover, 160pp., 75 color illus.

Summary: Developed during the mid-19th century in China, the bapo (or "eight brokens") painting genre combines ingeniously realistic depictions of antique documents, such as calligraphies, rubbings, paintings and pages from old books, sometimes alongside everyday contemporary ephemera, including advertisements, receipts and postmarked envelopes. The resulting, seemingly haphazard, overlapping compositions contain coded reflections on the decay of cultural traditions, or wishes for the recipient's good fortune. Widespread in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bapo was never popular with the upper echelons of the Chinese art world, and as a result was never recorded in art-history texts or mentioned by cultural critics. It became a lost branch of Chinese art—almost completely forgotten for the past 60 years. This book explores the origins of bapo in Chinese visual culture and traces how it blossomed into an intriguing and inventive tradition in the hands of many artists.

Title: Late Gothic Architecture : Its Evolution, Extinction, and Reception
Author: Bork, Robert
Price: $155.00
ISBN: 9782503568942
Record created on 04/24/2018
Description: Turnhout: Brepols, 2018. 28cm., pbk., 552pp., 32 color, 337 b&w illus.

Summary: In this book, Robert Bork offers a sweeping reassessment of late Gothic architecture and its fate in the Renaissance. In a chronologically organized narrative covering the whole of western and central Europe, he demonstrates that the Gothic design tradition remained inherently vital throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, creating spectacular monuments in a wide variety of national and regional styles. Bork argues that the displacement of this Gothic tradition from its long-standing position of artistic leadership in the years around 1500 reflected the impact of three main external forces: the rise of a rival architectural culture that championed the use of classical forms with a new theoretical sophistication; the appropriation of that architectural language by patrons who wished to associate themselves with papal and imperial Rome; and the chaos of the Reformation, which disrupted the circumstances of church construction on which the Gothic tradition had formerly depended. Bork further argues that art historians have much to gain from considering the character and fate of late Gothic architecture, not only because the monuments in question are intrinsically fascinating, but also because examination of the way their story has been told-and left untold, in many accounts of the Northern Renaissance-can reveal a great deal about schemes of categorization and prioritization that continue to shape the discipline even in the twenty-first century.

Contents: Introduction: The Anti-Gothic Turn. Chapter 1: Getting the Point-Antiquity to 1300. Chapter 2: From Gothic to Late Gothic-1300 to 1350. Chapter 3: The Evolution of Late Gothic-1350 to 1400. Chapter 4: The Antique Mode and its Gothic Context-1400 to 1450. Chapter 5: Polarized Modernisms-1450 to 1500. Chapter 6: Collision and Hybridity-1500 to 1525. Chapter 7: Purge and Extinction-1525 to 1575. Epilogue: The legacy of the Anti-Gothic Turn. (Architectura Medii Aevi, 10)

Title: WILLIAM BOUGUEREAU : The Essential Works
Author: Ross, Kara Lysandra ; Frederick C. Ross
Price: $65.00
ISBN: 9781851499106
Record created on 05/14/2018
Description: Woodbridge: Antique Collectors Club, 2018. 29cm., hardcover, 240pp., 200 color illus.

Summary: William Bouguereau, the most popular artist in nineteenth-century France, is rapidly becoming one of the most popular realist artists of all time. This book is an exploration of the four main types of paintings that were most prevalent throughout Bouguereau's body of work. This includes his mythological works, religious works, peasants, and portraits. This final section on portraits focuses on paintings of heads and hands, which gave the artist the opportunity to concentrate on the subtleties of capturing human emotion, something at which the artist was a consummate master, and is a primary factor in what makes his works, in general, so compelling. Although each section of the book discusses the importance of the individual genera within Bouguereau's oeuvre, and includes painting analyses to highlight his most important works, this book is a true showcase of the master's lifetime achievement through beautifully illustrated full-page plates of over 120 of his greatest masterpieces.

Description: London: Thames and Hudson, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 544pp., 1000 illus.

Summary: At the turn of the 20th century, Vienna became an epicenter for new thought, increasingly running counter to the prevalent conservatism symbolized by the neo-classical facades of the buildings in the city’s Ringstrasse. During the time of the modernist movement led by Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, and Koloman Moser, among others, a multidisciplinary environment emerged in which music, writing, and intellectual thought flourished, bringing different arts together in a “Gesamtkunstwerk” a total work of art. Covering all artistic fields, from painting to photography, the Wiener Werkstatte and decorative arts, fashion and architecture of fin-de-siecle Vienna and including biographies for featured artists, Vienna 1900 Complete is an unprecedented compilation of richly colored images curated and authored in a single volume by three leading scholars of the period.

Title: Conversation Pieces: The World of BRUEGEL
Author: Van Dongen, Alexandra (et al)
Price: $30.00
ISBN: 9789492677693
Record created on 09/18/2018
Description: Veurne: Cannibal Publishing, 2018. 23cm., pbk., 112pp. illus.

Summary: In 2019, it will be 450 years since the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/28-1569). To mark this anniversary, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is organising the first ever retrospective of Bruegel’s work, while The World of Bruegel will be shown in the Bokrijk Open-Air Museum. The two institutions are joining forces to bring Bruegel’s masterpiece Battle Between Carnival and Lent (1559) to life. An important key in this respect are the numerous everyday objects that are depicted in the painting. In collaboration with the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam) and the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), the props that Bruegel depicted have been examined and interpreted from a contemporary perspective. The authors allow the objects to speak for themselves, preceded by an introductory essay by curator Sabine Pénot of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Just as Bruegel’s paintings were ‘conversation pieces’ in their day, intended to trigger a discussion between guests during dinners, this book presents a three-way conversation about Battle Between Carnival and Lent through Bruegel realia, in which art history (Katrien Lichtert), historical design (Alexandra van Dongen and Lucinda Timmermans) and literature (Abdelkader Benali) enter into a dialogue. In A Conversation Piece, the authors reveal the humour, symbolism, imagery and hidden stories behind the everyday objects in the painting.

Record created on 05/25/2018
Description: London: Royal Academy of Arts, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 352pp., 300 color illus. Exhibition catalogue.

Summary: From the remote shores of Rapa Nui to the dense rainforest of Papua New Guinea, the islands of the Pacific are home to some of the most culturally diverse populations on the planet. The region embraces an extraordinary range of art forms, from delicate shell ornaments to spectacularly decorated canoes and meeting houses. These have fascinated outsiders since the exploratory voyages of Captain Cook, the first of which commenced 250 years ago in 1768, and they went on to entrance Gauguin and a host of other European artists. This volume accompanies a major survey in London and Paris of art from Oceania. It brings together the most up-to-date scholarship by the leading experts in the field, encompassing a dazzling array of objects from the region, including many that have never been published before. Also included are many works that have historically been overlooked, such as painted and woven textiles, elaborate wicker assemblages and eloquently sculpted vessels, alongside works by artists working in Oceania today. Objects of great aesthetic beauty, these artworks are the product of a complex web of social, mythological and historical influences.

Title: CARAVAGGIO : Il vero Matteo
Author: Magister, Sara
Price: $67.50
ISBN: 9788885795075
Record created on 04/27/2018
Description: Roma: Campisano, 2018. 27cm., pbk., 184pp., 160 color illus.

Summary: Based on a recent analysis of documents from the State Archives, it was possible for the first time to identify and integrate sources like Varchi’s and Nardi’s work to reconstruct, with almost daily accuracy, the events that occurred in the ten months of siege, from October 1529 to August 1530. No sacrifice was deemed too great to defend the ‘sweet liberty’ that is cited in every document and for which the people of Florence were willing to give their life and their possessions. Author: Cleland, Elizabeth (et al)
Price: $40.00
ISBN: 9780300237061
Record created on 03/19/2018
Description: New Haven: Yale University Press, for the Cleveland Museum of Art, 2018. 29cm., hardcover, 96pp., 131 color illus. Exhibition catalogue.

Summary: Featuring detailed scenes of court pageantry and life-size portraits of members of the French Valois dynasty woven in wool, silk, and precious metal-wrapped threads, the Valois Tapestries are one of the most extravagant sets of hangings produced in the 16th century. The precise circumstances surrounding the tapestries’ commission and their arrival at the Medici court in Florence, as well as the significance of the specific scenes depicted, however, have eluded scholars for years. Presenting new research into the political maneuvering of the Valois and Medici courts and providing extensive physical analysis gathered during a recent cleaning of the tapestries, this volume offers brand new insight into why these magnificent works were made and what they represent.

Title: Restoration: The Fall of Napoleon in the Course of European Art, 1812-1820
Author: Crow, Thomas
Price: $39.95
ISBN: 9780691181646
Record created on 04/24/2018
Description: Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2018. 27cm., hardcover, 208pp., 160 color illus.

Summary: As the French Empire collapsed between 1812 and 1815, artists throughout Europe were left uncertain and adrift. The final abdication of Emperor Napoleon, clearing the way for a restored monarchy, profoundly unsettled prevailing national, religious, and social boundaries. In Restoration, Thomas Crow combines a sweeping view of European art centers—Rome, Paris, London, Madrid, Brussels, and Vienna—with a close-up look at pivotal and significant artists, including Antonio Canova, Jacques-Louis David, Théodore Géricault, Francisco Goya, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Thomas Lawrence, and forgotten but meteoric painters François-Joseph Navez and Antoine Jean-Baptiste Thomas. Whether directly or indirectly, all became linked in a new international network in which changing artistic priorities and possibilities emerged from the ruins of the old. Crow examines how artists of this period faced dramatic circumstances, from political condemnation and difficult diplomatic missions to a catastrophic episode of climate change. Navigating ever-changing pressures, they invented creative ways of incorporating critical events and significant individuals into fresh artistic works. Crow discusses, among many topics, David’s art and pedagogy during exile, Ingres’s drive to reconcile religious art with contemporary mentalities, the titled victors over Napoleon all sitting for portraits by Lawrence, and the campaign to restore art objects expropriated by the French from Italy, prefiguring the restitution controversies of our own time. Summary: This catalogue explores four books that are remarkable survivals of what people read in the Middle Ages – the finest of medieval Bibles (the greatest text of Western civilization), one of the oldest Books of Hours (the most famous medieval manuscripts of all), Biography (the unique legend of an Anglo-Saxon princess), and the History of Troy (the oldest chivalric story in European history). These are all manuscripts unknown on the market for at least eighty years. One of the four was last described in print in 1588; the others were last catalogued for sale in 1909, 1932 and 1938 respectively. All are richly illustrated, with a total of 133 miniatures between them, as well as hundreds of borders and illuminated animals and grotesques. Some of the finest artists of the period were responsible for the miniatures, and at least two of them likely issue directly from the greatest of European courts...

Title: Van Dyck's Hosts in Genoa : Lucas and Cornelis DE WAEL's Lives, Business Activities and Works
Author: Stoesser, Alison
Price: $325.00
ISBN: 9782503531755
Record created on 09/27/2011
Description: Turnhout: Brepols, 2018. 2 vols. 27cm., hardcover, 1028pp., 40 color, 683 b&w illus. English text

From the review by Timothy Standring in The Burlington, February 2019: "(...) scholars will benefit from Stoesser’s exacting analysis of precisely how artists navigated the commercial and creative aspects of marketing their works to clients – especially in Genoa – during the first half of the seicento. Few other authors go to the effort of explaining the foundations of artistic practice on a commercial level, to outline the main tenets of the theoretical discourse that subsumed the creation of many of these works, or of reviewing arcane source material (the reader learns, for example, that it took over one hundred different motions to load a musket, information cited to substantiate the accuracy of details in Cornelis’s military works."

Summary: Long overshadowed by the brilliance of their close friend, Anthony van Dyck, Lucas and Cornelis de Wael, active as artists and dealers in Antwerp, Genoa and Rome, have largely been ignored in Flemish art historical literature. No monograph on them has appeared since 1925. This book aims to rectify this situation by giving a global overview of their wide-ranging pursuits. However, before assessing their personal histories it first examines the historical context, particularly with respect to the 17th-century art market in these three cities, with special attention given to its structure in Genoa, so far neglected in surveys of the Italian markets. A fresh appraisal of information from archival and other sources in each city has been undertaken to give a revealing up-to-date insight into their lives, trading activities in goods ranging from art works to second-hand clothing and hides, as well as their extensive network of friends and clients stretching from the Northern Netherlands to Sicily, including their close business association with the prominent Flemish art dealer Matthijs Musson and the Moretus family, owners of the Plantin-Moretus publishing house. Their own contribution to the art world is not neglected, with a full discussion of their works and an accompanying catalogue raisonné, which, in Cornelis de Wael’s case, includes his extensive oeuvre of paintings, drawings and prints. In addition, the De Wael brothers’ crucial function as hosts to Dutch and Flemish artists in both Genoa and Rome, with Van Dyck being the most famous, is also considered, while Cornelis de Wael’s not inconsiderable role in making Rembrandt’s prints known in both cities in his capacity as an art dealer is brought into focus. Despite the relative obscurity of his works till now, the sometimes unexpected influence of these on other artists from as far apart as the Northern Netherlands and Spain is also given careful attention. Title: The Art of Allusion : Illuminators and the Making of English Literature, 1403-1476
Author: Drimmer, Sonja
Price: $59.95
ISBN: 9780812250497
Record created on 05/23/2018
Description: Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2018. 27cm., hardcover, 368pp., 27 color, 97 b&w illus.

Summary: At the end of the fourteenth and into the first half of the fifteenth century Geoffrey Chaucer, John Gower, and John Lydgate translated and revised stories with long pedigrees in Latin, Italian, and French. Royals and gentry alike commissioned lavish manuscript copies of these works, copies whose images were integral to the rising prestige of English as a literary language. Yet despite the significance of these images, manuscript illuminators are seldom discussed in the major narratives of the development of English literary culture. The newly enlarged scale of English manuscript production generated a problem: namely, a need for new images. Not only did these images need to accompany narratives that often had no tradition of illustration, they also had to express novel concepts, including ones as foundational as the identity and suitable representation of an English poet. In devising this new corpus, manuscript artists harnessed visual allusion as a method to articulate central questions and provide at times conflicting answers regarding both literary and cultural authority. Sonja Drimmer traces how, just as the poets embraced intertexuality as a means of invention, so did illuminators devise new images through referential techniques—assembling, adapting, and combining images from a range of sources in order to answer the need for a new body of pictorial matter. Featuring more than one hundred illustrations, 27 of them in color, The Art of Allusion is the first book devoted to the emergence of England's literary canon as a visual as well as a linguistic event. Title: Divine Conception: The Art of the Annunciation
Author: Drummond, Sarah
Price: $37.95
ISBN: 9781911604112
Record created on 11/28/2017
Description: London: Unicorn Press, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 176pp., 130 color illus.

Summary: Divine Conception: The Art of the Annunciation asks the questions: How to evoke the invisible in the visible? How to convey the divine in the human? Focussing on twelve specific aspects of the Annunciation (for instance, where Mary is reading, or where Joseph is present at the event), the book explores images (paintings, illuminated manuscripts, ivories, mosaics, sculpture, wall paintings, metal work) in the context of the period when they were made. Each chapter reflects on contemporaneous treatises, sermons, patron’s requirements, devotional practices, artistic conventions, theological concerns, that informed the artist and his audience. The works of art discussed relate to the Latin West from the earliest times, with a cut-off date towards the middle of the 16th century.

Author: Affron, Matthew (et al)

Record created on 03/14/2018
Description: New Haven: Yale University Press, in association with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2018. 25cm., pbk., 232pp., 180 color illus. Exhibition catalogue.

Summary: This richly illustrated publication explores the full career of the hugely influential and endlessly fascinating French-American artist Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968). A pioneer whose creative output was predicated on a fundamental questioning of what art is, Duchamp is well known despite remaining mysterious as an artist, owing to his elusive persona and the unconventional nature of his work. Focusing on the world-renowned Duchamp collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Essential Duchamp tells the artist’s story through four key periods. The book begins with his early paintings and engagement with the avant-garde, then charts his abandonment of painting and invention of the readymade. This is followed by the creation of his alter ego Rrose Sélavy and the optical experiments of the interwar years, and, finally, by the making of Étant donnés (1946–66), the project that occupied the artist in the final two decades of his life. Shorter accompanying texts include explanations of key terms Duchamp used for his innovative ideas—readymade, pictorial nominalism, precision optics, and infrathin—as well as interviews and statements by the artist about his own art and ideas.

Price: $69.95
ISBN: 9782760549784
Record created on 09/27/2018
Published on occasion of the exhibition held at Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal.

Author: Elligott, Michelle
Price: $45.00
ISBN: 9781633450509
Record created on 05/25/2018
Description: New York: Museum of Modern Art, 2018. 27cm., hardcover, 176pp., 204 color illus.

Summary: Rene d'Harnoncourt served as the director of the Museum of Modern Art from 1949 to 1968, and was known for his conscientious approach to curating exhibitions and his genius for installation design and display. His interest in non-Western and non-modern art shaped much of MoMA's ambitious programming in the mid-20th century: in addition to shows addressing modern art, such as The Sculpture of Picasso (1968) and Modern Art in Your Life (1949), he organized exhibitions devoted to themes not generally associated with MoMA, including Indian Art of the United States (1941), Arts of the South Seas (1946), Ancient Arts of the Andes (1954) and Art of the Asmat: The Collection of Michael C. Rockefeller (1962). This publication delves deep into the MoMA Archives to reveal d'Harnoncourt's mastery of installation through an essay by Michelle Elligott and an exploration of 12 of the exhibitions he installed at MoMA, each richly illustrated by d'Harnoncourt's mostly previously unpublished sketches alongside exhibition photographs. A master draftsman, d'Harnoncourt produced meticulous sketches of installation vistas as well as the objects included in his exhibitions. An illustrated chronology of d'Harnoncourt's life rounds out the volume, detailing his multifaceted journey from birth as a count into a landowning family in Austria, to his time as a commercial artist in Mexico, to his post working for Nelson A. Rockefeller in the US State Department (Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs), which eventually led to his appointment at MoMA.

Summary: This scenic stretch of estates along the Hudson offers some of the finest examples of American architecture and landscape design. The edition's thirty-five featured homes were designed in a range of styles by notable architects Stanford White, A. J. Davis, Calvert Vaux, Warren and Wetmore, and more. Record created on 02/11/2019
Description: Cremona: Edizioni Del Miglio, 2019. 24cm., pbk., 98pp. text and catalogue, 66 plates, most in color.

Title: American Art Pottery : The Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection
Author: Frelinghuysen, Alice Cooney (et al)
Price: $65.00
ISBN: 9781588395962
Record created on 03/19/2018
Description: New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 352pp., 400 color illus.

Summary: During the height of the Arts and Crafts era in Europe and the United States, from the late 1800s until World War I, American ceramics were transformed from industrially produced ornamental and table wares to aesthetically and technologically innovative art pottery. This fascinating history is exemplified by the outstanding works in the collection of Robert A. Ellison Jr., who over half a century assembled one of the most important and comprehensive selections of American art pottery. More than 300 of the finest examples of works made by both well-known and less familiar ceramists, including George E. Ohr, Hugh Robertson, Charles Volkmar, Mary Louise McLaughlin, Matt Morgan, Maria Longworth Nichols, and Ferderick Hurten Rhead, are beautifully reproduced, along with numerous period advertisements and photographs, imparting a full understanding of the movement’s personalities and achievements.

Title: The McCarthy Collection Vol I: Italian and Byzantine Miniatures
Author: Freuler, Gaudenz
Price: $120.00
ISBN: 9781912168071
Record created on 08/08/2018
Description: London: Holberton, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 304pp., 250 color plates.

Summary: This handsomely produced publication is the first of a two volume set exploring an outstanding collection of leaves and miniatures from medieval manuscripts. Brimming with beautiful illustrations, this welcome contribution to medieval scholarship covers a period from the late 9th to the late 15th centuries and incorporates new discoveries in this still growing field.

The turbulent times when Napoleon’s troops were sweeping over Europe under the banner of secularization, seeking to suppress ecclesiastical influence within the sphere of political power, had disastrous consequences especially for ecclesiastical libraries, which were broken up and looted. The Italian religious houses had their cultural treasures destroyed or moved out of context and spread all over the world to satisfy a growing market for medieval art. These fatal years (1796–99) coincide with a major interest in early Italian painting, when French and English connoisseurs joined their Italian colleagues in a systematic study of early Italian art, producing fundamental studies on the subject.

Essentially the deplorable practice of breaking up manuscripts and liturgical books was not all that different from the inglorious process of dismembering giant medieval altarpieces, whose single pieces were made available to a growing market and, consequently, dispersed among different collections. Thus, in the present day, one of the major tasks of the art historian is the attempt to reassemble these fragments and present them in virtual reconstructions, reconstituting their original context. By doing this, scholars create the foundation for any further art-historical analysis of a work of art. This task is one of the important objectives in cataloguing the present collection.

The miniatures and single leaves in the McCarthy collection, which has been formed in the past two or three decades – between 1990 and today – are manifestly the fruit of the destructive, but at the same time a conservational effort. Even though assembled in relatively recent years, the McCarthy collection stands in line with many similar anthologies of miniature in private or public hands. However, by contrast to other similar collections, the McCarthy collection has not limited its focus just on one school of European illumination, the Italian centres of illumination, but aims to present a vast panorama of this sophisticated art, which, to use Dante’s words, was called ‘illumination’ (‘... quell arte ch’alluminar chiamata è in Parisi’; Purgatorio, XI, 79–80). The present volume is dedicated to the holdings of single leaves and miniatures from medieval Italian manuscripts, which cover a period from the late 9th to the late 15th centuries, and are enriched by a few Byzantine items, appropriately included here and discussed by Georgi Parpulov. The focus on late 13th- and early 14th-century illumination in the collection demonstrates McCarthy’s predilection for the medieval and early Gothic world, which also becomes apparent in his holdings of French and German illumination, to be discussed by Peter Kidd in volume II, to be announced shortly.

Title: Kensington Palace
Author: Fryman, Olivia (et al)
Price: $75.00
ISBN: 9780300236538
Record created on 03/19/2018
Description: New Haven: Yale University Press, in association with the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, 2018. 29cm., hardcover, 392pp., 448 illus.

Summary: Kensington Palace is renowned for its architecture, splendid interiors, internationally important collections, and, of course, its royal residents. This lavish book thoroughly explores Kensington’s physical beauty and its history, presenting new material drawn from archives, newspapers, personal letters, images, and careful analysis of the building itself. Originally a fashionable Jacobean villa, Kensington was dramatically rebuilt in 1689 by Christopher Wren for the newly crowned monarchs, William III and Mary II. The palace became the favored London home of five sovereigns, surviving fires, partial collapse, bombings, and periods of neglect. Queen Victoria recognized its national significance and set about restyling the massive structure with some of England’s greatest architects and artists. With over 450 illustrations, including specially commissioned reconstructions and historic plans, this volume explores the personal tastes and fashions of the British monarchy over the course of 300 years and provides insight into the 20th- and 21st-century royal family’s domestic life.

Title: HENRY FUSELI : Drama and Theatre
Author: Reifert, Eva ; Bodo Brinkmann
Price: $60.00
ISBN: 9783791357584
Record created on 02/14/2018
Description: Munich-New York: Prestel, 2018. 28cm., hardcover, 240pp., 160 color illus. Exhibition held at Kunstmuseum Basel. English edition.

Summary: Thirteen years after the last major presentation of his work in Switzerland, at the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Kunstmuseum Basel mounts a comprehensive monographic exhibition of the work of Henry Fuseli, a native son of Zurich who rose to fame in Rome and London. One of the most inventive and unconventional innovators in late-eighteenth-century art, Fuseli stood on the threshold between classicism and nascent Romanticism. His oeuvre bears eloquent witness to the competing artistic paradigms in the waning decades of the Age of Enlightenment. Fuseli styled himself as a painter of Dark Romanticism and «Gothic horror», and that aspect of his oeuvre is still most familiar to audiences today. Shifting the focus, the exhibition demonstrates that drama and theater were no less vital to his artistic vision: the erudite artist’s creations almost invariably draw on literary motifs, quoting ancient mythology, John Milton’s Paradise Lost, or the recently rediscovered Nibelungen saga. After his return from Rome to London in 1779, Shakespeare’s plays become another major source of motifs in his art, as his contributions to John Boydell’s Shakespeare Gallery illustrate. Drama and Theater—the title captures the interest in the themes from literary and stage works chosen by Fuseli that animates the exhibition, but it also describes his dynamic compositions and constellations of characters and the «theatrical» devices that often enliven his depictions. Like Fuseli’s art itself, Drama and Theater is hardly subtle. The artist’s seven paintings in the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel, the municipal art collection of Basel, are complemented by works generously provided on loan by the Kunsthaus Zürich and other international museums and private collections. Reflecting on the conjunction of literature, theater, and visual art from another angle, Thom Luz, director at the Basler Schauspielhaus, will enhance the exhibition by bringing his contemporary theatrical practice into the gallery.

Summary: Il volume raccoglie i contributi del seminario Girolamo Genga: una via obliqua alla maniera moderna (Bologna, Fondazione Federico Zeri | Pesaro, Villa Imperiale 30 giugno ? 2 luglio 2016).

Title: City Views in the Habsburg and Medici Courts : Depictions of Rhetoric and Rule in the Sixteenth Century
Author: Gregg, Ryan E
Price: $227.00
ISBN: 9789004357204
Record created on 07/02/2018
Description: Leiden: Brill, 2018. 24cm., hardcover, 418pp., 259 color illus.

Summary: In City Views in the Habsburg and Medici Courts, Ryan E. Gregg relates how Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and Duke Cosimo I of Tuscany employed city view artists such as Anton van den Wyngaerde and Giovanni Stradano to aid in constructing authority. These artists produced a specific style of city view that shared affinity with Renaissance historiographic practice in its use of optical evidence and rhetorical techniques. History has tended to see city views as accurate recordings of built environments. Bringing together ancient and Renaissance texts, archival material, and fieldwork in the depicted locations, Gregg demonstrates that a close-knit school of city view artists instead manipulated settings to help persuade audiences of the truthfulness of their patrons’ official narratives.

Author: Guerrieri Borsoi, Maria Barbara
Price: $45.00
ISBN: 9788849236958
Record created on 12/24/2018
Description: Roma: Gangemi, 2018. 24cm., pbk., 192pp. illus., 59 color plates.

Author: Guzman, Miguel Tain
Price: $130.00

Record created on 10/26/2017
Description: Turnhout: Harvey Miller, 2018. 30 x 24cm., hardcover, 156pp., 147 color illus.

Summary: The Grand Tour of Cosimo di Ferdinando de' Medici, prince of Tuscany, between 1668 and 1669, included many of the great states of Europe - Spain, Portugal, England, Holland and France - in a carefully prepared itinerary chosen to help educate and prepare the 26-year old prince to one day become Grand Duke of Tuscany. All the places chosen to visit were selected to impart cultural, economic, or political advantage to the prince, and none more so than his longest visit: Spain. Lasting more than five months, he visited the cities of Barcelona, Martorell, Montserrat, Igualada, Lleida, Zaragoza, Daroca, Guadelajara, Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Toledo, Mora, Consuegra, Villanueva de los Infantes, Andújar, El Carpio, Córdoba, Castro del Río, Granada, Ecija, Carmona, Sevilla, Zafra, Badajoz, and briefly, Lisbon. In March 1669, he reached Santiago de Compostela, arguably the highlight of the trip, where he made a pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James the Apostle in the city's cathedral. The travel diaries of five members of his retinue describe the visit in great detail, providing a rare account of the city and the pilgrim's rites and rituals. Another member of the prince's entourage, the Florentine artist, Pier Maria Baldi, painted a large-scale panorama of Compostela, the most valuable cityscape from the 1600s known to date. Using hitherto unknown source material, this volume charts a journey to one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world, then held as an equal to Rome and Jerusalem, that stimulated the piety of the man who would become Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Summary: Becoming a Woman in the Age of Enlightenment: French Art from The Horvitz Collection is primarily an exhibition of drawings, but will include pastels, paintings and sculptures selected from one of the world’s best private collections of French drawings. The exhibition will feature more than 150 works by many of the most prominent artists of the eighteenth and early nineteenth-century, including Antoine Watteau, Nicolas Lancret, François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, as well as lesser-known artists both male and female, such as Anne Vallayer-Coster, Gabrielle Capet, François-André Vincent, Philibert-Louis Debucourt. Ranging from spirited, improvisational sketches and figural studies, to highly finished drawings of exquisite beauty, the works included in the exhibition vary in terms of style, genre and period.

Becoming a Woman will be organized into thematic sections that address some of the most important and defining questions of women’s lives in the eighteenth century. These include: how the stages of a woman's life were measured; what cultural attitudes and conditions in France shaped how women were defined; what significant relations women formed with men; what social and familial rituals gave order to their lives; what pleasures they pursued; and what work they accomplished. The aim is to bring new insights to the questions of what it meant to be a woman in this period, by offering the first exhibition to focus specifically on representations of women of a broad range of ages and conditions.

The exhibition will offer fresh perspectives on a subject that still has direct relevance to our times, but that has not been the focus of a significant exhibition for decades. Through its conceptual framework, thematic organization and its emphasis on historical context, the exhibition will provide viewers opportunities to consider what issues pertaining to women’s lives seem to have changed or persisted through time and across space. Although the circumstances and the specifics have changed, many issues remain with us today and can still provoke contentious debates. Pay equity, reproductive rights, gender-discrimination, violence against women, work-family balance, the ‘plight’ of the alpha-female, and the devaluation of the stay-at-home mom, are but a few of the women’s issues that are still hotly contested in the media, in cultural production of all kinds, in politics, and in public and private life.

Description: Firenze: Mandragora, 2018. 31cm., hardcover, 300pp., ca. 500 color illus.

Description: Geneve: Metis Presses, 2018. 30cm., hardcover, 496pp. prof. illus. Exhibition held at Fondation Bodmer, Geneve. French text.

Summary: The exhibition invites visitors to discover a major cultural phenomenon: the constant interchange between garden and book, and within book and garden. Reference will be made to Eden, epic gardens, the purgatory garden, the gardens of Venus and the Virgin Mary Garden, and to Poliphilo’s Strife of Love in a Dream as a pattern book for European gardens. Orlando Furioso makes up the subtext for the Gardens of Bomarzo; a key passage of Paradise Lost will be the aesthetic point of origin of the English Garden while Goethe’s Elective Affinities and garden visions, dreams and projects of great authors will be dealt with. Structured as a place to leisurely walk through, the exhibition opens up the fascinating world of the garden represented in books as a physical place and an intellectual construct. From ancient Babylon to today’s world, the exhibition presents, from a diachronic perspective, the most important documents reflecting the ever-present interest in gardens through time, national traditions and genres such as epics, poetry, prose, scientific theories, or manuals. Present as well is the success of the “beautiful garden book” as a novelty and capstone of the art of the book; among those are the one’s noted for their exceptional workmanship, introducing existing gardens or garden projects, as well as unfairly forgotten books, such as the Fruits Walls Improved by the Swiss mathematician, natural philosopher, and inventor Nicolas Fatio de Duillier.
