The work is not an essays on Italian maps of the sixteenth century but a carto-bibliography of sixteenth-century Italian cartography, intended to provide a complete census of all maps printed in Italy during its Golden Age. The work represents the first catalog raisonne of Italian mapmakers, significantly updating and expanding the work of Ronald Tooley's Maps in Italian Atlases of the Sixteenth Century. Printed in three volumes, the work describes and illustrates 1,280 maps, many of which are identified in multiple states (Tooley's work totaled 614 maps). Each map description includes a photograph, descriptin, and essay. These essays detail all the known sates and possible unknown issues, as well as give a complete census of copies known in public collections. The work if the result of the author's life-long devotion to the study of the topic, emphasizing an understanding of the maps, critically comparing each known map for various states and recording evidence of states of maps which no longer survive. Long awaited by the scholary, curatorial and collecting communities, the work will become the standard reference tool for scholars, curators, collectors, and archivists, as well as enthusiasts interested in learning about the richness and diversity of Italian cartographic publishing during its Golden Age.
