Summary: Based on a recent analysis of documents from the State Archives, it was possible for the first time to identify and integrate sources like Varchi’s and Nardi’s work to reconstruct, with almost daily accuracy, the events that occurred in the ten months of siege, from October 1529 to August 1530. No sacrifice was deemed too great to defend the ‘sweet liberty’ that is cited in every document and for which the people of Florence were willing to give their life and their possessions.
