Summary: Paolo Caliari, called Veronese (1528–1588), ranks alongside Titian and Tintoretto as one of the most important representatives of Venetian Renaissance painting. The Cuccina Cycle, painted in about 1571, is one of Veronese’s major works. The cycle is named after the family who commissioned it, one of the richest families in Venice, and consists of four exceptionally large paintings: The Adoration of the Magi, The Wedding at Cana, The Bearing of the Cross and The Madonna of the Cuccina Family. Following thorough-going restoration over a period of four years, it is now possible to appreciate once again Veronese’s outstanding artistic skill: the brilliance of the colours, the artist’s free brushwork, the intensity of the composition; in short, the fascinating sensuality and vivid narrative character of these paintings. The exhibition provides insights into the restoration process and the scientific analyses carried out.
