Exhibition held at Singer, Laren. English text. Summary: Impressionism & Beyond. A Wonderful Journey shows and describes the last great period in which Western European art flourished. This book is about the paintings and works on paper by the world-famous Impressionists and Post-Impressionists from the collection of the John and Marine van Vlissingen Art Foundation. During the period from 1860 to 1870, a group of artists in France were producing work that ran contrary to the prevailing academic opinions about painting. The Impressionists, as they were known, went out into the countryside and broke with traditions and rules, representing reality with rapid, fluid brushstrokes. The first Impressionists were artists such as Monet, Manet, Degas, and Renoir. This eventually produced a response in the work of the so-called Neo-Impressionists such as Van Gogh, Signac, and Toorop, and Fauvists such as Van Dongen, Marquet, and Matisse. They went further than merely representing that which can be observed, focusing also on expressing emotions and on structure and composition.
