Item Number: 147669 Title: Katastrophenbilder : Der Vesuvausbruch 1631 in den Bildkünsten der Frühen Neuzeit Author: Koppenleitner, Vera Fionie Price: Not Available ISBN: 9783422074552 Description: München: Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2018. 24cm., pbk., 232pp., 33 color, 80 b&w illus. German text. Summary: The study at hand explores the extensive pictorial material on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, retracing the iconographic traditions and situating the works in their social, political and religious contexts. In addition, parallels are drawn to a scholarly discourse on catastrophes that began at the same time. It is shown that catastrophes had become increasingly profane and had been described in terms far removed from their meanings for the history of salvation. This altered iconography of catastrophes also attests to a changing view of history – and one that took place long before the earthquake in Lisbon in 1755.
