Exhibition held at Walter Storms Galerie, Munich. German-English-Italian texts. Summary: Venetian artist Carlo Scarpa (1906-78) was one of the outstanding architects of the twentieth century, creating buildings for museums in Venice, Florence, and Verona, as well as many other major buildings At the same time as he worked on these commissions, he viewed the role of architect as that of a lone wolf, seeing his discipline as a form of art based fundamentally on craftsmanship. This book focuses on a work that shows that approach to unforgettable effect: a tomb for businessman Giuseppe Brion in Treviso. In designing the tomb, Scarpa had complete freedom, working across a vast space to fuse buildings of fair-faced concrete with the surrounding landscape to create a magnificent work the invites meditation. Munich photographer Klaus Kinold documented the remarkable tomb, and his carefully composed pictures, both black-and-white and subtly using color, depict an otherworldly place that translates our ideas of growth and decay in an expansively constructed symbolism.
