Item Number: 144489 Title: Il Braccio Nuovo : I volti del restauro Author: Paolucci, Antonio (et al) Price: Not Available ISBN: 9788882713966 Description: Citta del Vaticano: Edizioni Musei Vaticani, 2016. 27cm., pbk., 56pp., 105 illus. Italian text. Summary: Published on the occasion of the conclusion of the restoration of the New Wing, inaugurated on 21 December 2016. The art-historical essay by Antonio Paolucci traces the events in the history of the gallery, describing its architectural beauty, but above all the story of the formation of the sculptural collection held therein, the fruit of a careful and skilful campaign of acquisitions coordinated by Antonio Canova: statues of gods and emperors, the Augustus of Prima Porta, busts of eminent figures and members of the Roman aristocracy, up to the majestic sculpture of the Nile. This is followed by a brief illustration of the complex restoration project, which lasted 7 years, and the results of the interventions, which have restored to their original splendour the architectural structure and the 140 sculptures, thanks to the synergy that enabled the successful convergence of the many skills of the various Scientific Departments and Laboratories of the Museums, along with a number of external restoration firms. The photographic accompaniment consists of many period images, evocative shots taken during restoration and previously unseen details of the sculptures in the gallery, captured for the purpose at the end of the restoration campaign.
