Author: Bauer-Eberhardt, Ulrike

ISBN: 9783895007590
Description: Wiesbaden: Reichert, 2011. 2 vols. 33cm., hardcover. Vol. 1 : Textband, 298pp.; Vol. 2 : Tafelband, 224pp., 412 illus., many in color. Summary: The illuminated manuscripts from Italy which are held in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München date from the pre-Carolingian period up to the 16th century. The oldest codices have already been described in the catalogue of illuminated pre-Carolingian and Carolingian manuscripts (Katharina Bierbrauer, Katalog der illuminierten Handschriften der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek in München, Band 1. Wiesbaden 1990). The remaining material from the 10th century onwards will be presented in a two-part catalogue which is under preparation. Each volume covers a wide geographical area (the entire Italian peninsula) and chronological scope: the first part, to be published in 2010, covers manuscripts from five centuries, which are described in great detail and assigned to regions of origin on the basis of their painted decoration ranging from simple ornamental initials sometimes hard to localize to comprehensive cycles of miniatures. Among the latter are numerous 13th- and 14th-century legal manuscripts from Bologna held by the library. The catalogue is accompanied by a volume of reproductions.
