Summary: The museum of Veterinary Pathology and Teratology Alessandrini-Ercolani belongs to the University Museum System (UMS, SMA) of Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna. The museum exhibits many dry preparations and full-scale clay, plaster and wax models reproducing pathological and teratological animals, organs or parts of organs, made by well-known wax modeller (plastic artist, ceroplasta) Cesare Bettini, employed in XIX century by Bologna University’s Anatomy Laboratories. Nowadays, the label C. Bettini handmade still appears on some items with the date of manufacture. Cesare Bettini’s work was directed for nearly half a century (1834-1883) by both the two museum’s founders end collection promoters, Professor Antonio Alessandrini (1834-1861) and Professor Giovanni Battista Ercolani (1863-1883). The collection of Bettini’s works has a historic-artistic value (the coloured plastics are rare to the point of being unique and some of them reproduce morbid entity disappeared in Europe as the bovine contagious pleuropneumonia) and moreover an educational value as the collection can boast numbers of organ lesions of current diseases useful for the demonstration to students of Veterinary Pathology. 49 selected Cesare Bettini’s drawings, wax and plaster models of animal pathology and teratology are illustrated in this volume.
