Item Number: 114265 Title: BENEDETI MARCUCCI : Treccani sottolio Author: Price: Not Available ISBN: 9788837084523 Description: Milano: Electa, 2010. 24cm., pbk., 75pp. illus., most in color. Italian-English text. Exhibition held at MACRO, Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Roma. Summary: The catalogue of the exhibition Treccani sottolio at the MACRO gallery in Rome, contains articles and images of Benedetto Marcucci's creations under oil. His works make it impossible to touch or use the books he has sealed under oil. The artist puts them into a sort of limbo, sealed in glass jars, so that they can only be observed under oil from outside. In other words, a conserve. The Treccani Encyclopaedia is an enterprise which, through gargantuan scientific effort, has attempted to encapsulate human knowledge. But Treccani sottolio has deliberately been made to hang in an ambiguous balance between the glorification and the annihilation of the encyclopaedia. In fact, as Benedetto Marcucci says, books are no longer an active source of knowledge, but have become almost apotropaic objects used as furnishings.
