Title: Gonzaga : Genealogie di una dinastia, i nomi e i volti
Author: Malacarne, Giancarlo
Price: Not Available
ISBN: 9788886251891
Description: Modena: Il Bulino, 2010. 29cm., hardcover, 454pp., illus., most in color. Summary: The new book by G.Malacarne, Mantuan historian, completes the collection “I Gonzaga di Mantova” (5 volumes published between 2004 and 2008), taking its starting and inspiring point from some genealogical documents of the Gonzaga family found by private collectors and never published before. The volume is based mainly on the Genealogia Gonzagorum Familiae, a big map that probably belonged once right to the Mantuan family and that was found out by a private collector that had it restored. He then placed it at the author's disposal, so that a very deep study could be done and even a comparison with all other similar documents. The result is an extraordinary roundup of more than 1500 personalities, starting from 356 a.d. (following a suggestive as well as legendary proposal that pretends that the Gonzaga come from the kings of Italy and from the emperors of the Sacred Roman Empire) to 1730, when the last duke of Mantua had already abandoned power since more than twenty years. To all people interested in this field, this book offers new fascinating documents and their relevant iconographic apparatus, as always very important and significant. At the same time scholars can find here new sources on the history of a dynasty and of a territory that for four centuries had an active role in the history and in the politics of Europe.
