Description: Roma: Bardi, 2007. 24cm., pbk., 298pp., 228 illus. Abstract. – The aim of this complex study by Sebastiano Giordano is to discover specific literary sources and suggestive figurative documentation – classical, medieval, humanistic and so forth – that, when accurately correlated, furnish attempt at a complete and articulated critical analysis of one of the most enigmatic allegorical paintings of the golden age of the Italian Renaissance. The artist – Giulio Pippi, commonly known as Giulio Romano, pupil and close associate of Raphael – even though nurtured by the humanistic awareness to rediscover the mythology of classical antiquity with confidence in a new textual and iconographical philology, is not afraid of reclothing the protagonists of ancient myths with new and hermetic allegorical meanings. The vast bibliography now makes it possible to scan an innovative interpretation of the image of an Allegory that, even though it values the hermetic culture with which the Roman artist became acquainted in the Eternal City of the early 1500s, reaches maturity through the privileged contact with the intellectuals and representatives of the natural sciences who gravited around the prestigious ducal court of Gonzaga in Mantua, when it was closely connected with the Este court in Ferrara. The author of the Memoir reconstructs the unpublished historical vicissitudes that the work of art analysed here has undergone in the course of four and a half centuries and which, after Mantua and Rome, caused the painting to end up decorating – even though its obscure mythological message was completely overlooked – an aristocratic English residence, and, lastly, to be purchased by the prestigious Detroit Institute of Arts thanks to the munificence of a wealthy American businessman. After a brief premise, Giordano’s work continues in a series of single excursus whose intent is to favour the reading of each iconographical detail used by the Renaissance painter to outline a philosophically meaningful itinerary. The initiatory reading is aimed at a spiritual scrutiny along the difficult path to Life in the Creation: from primordial Chaos to final Resurrection. The tortuous imaginative route twists and turns among superhuman pagan perils, here with the arcane meaning of “trials of purification” to be overcome in order to reach the refinement of an intimate new character, capable of reanimating those who intend to reach the state of golden eschatological bliss.
