This study provides the first exhaustive description of the materials, techniques and studio practices of Lucas Cranach the Elder. Approximately 300 panel paintings are examined using a wide range of analytical methods. Furthermore, the author documents the breadth and diversity of Lucas Cranach the Elderís unique contribution to 16th-century German canvas painting. The importance of this almost lost part of the court painterís oeuvre is completely reassessed. This work is a contribution towards the history of Renaissance painting in Germany with regard to materials and techniques. It offers a detailed, deeper understanding of the various processes of artistic production in the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder.
