Item Number: 57629Title: Lura ögat. Fem seklers bländverk [The Delude Eye. Five Centuries of Deception] Author: Sidén, Karin (et al) Price: $52.50 ISBN: 9789171007766 Description: Stockholm: Nationalmuseum, 2008. 24cm., pbk., 207pp. illus., most in color. Texts in Swedish, with English summary. The exhibition The Deluded Eye (Lura ögat) explores the trompe l'œil tradition from the 16th century and up until today. More than 150 works of art in a variety of techniques are on show. The deliberate attempt to delude the onlooker into believing that what is depicted is three-dimensional and real rather than two-dimensional and fictitious runs like a red thread through the history of western art. In the exhibition catalogue this central phenomenon in the history of art will be explored, starting with the Renaissance and up until to today. A pioneering contribution deals with Swedish circumstances and their relationship to an international trompe l´œil tradition. The juxtaposition of earlier and contemporary works and the focus on uses of the tradition in the new digital techniques and media will, in its turn, enhance understanding of earlier works as well as contemporary art and the genre itself. The catalogue deals with the trompe l’oeil tradition in painting, architecture, landscape gardening and the applied arts. In one essay interest focuses on perception and visualisation and in particular on illusionary works of art. Particular attention is paid to one of the most important exponents of trompe l’oeil painting, Cornelius Gijsbrechts, as well as to the contents and importance of the genre in Holland in the 17th century in this lavishly illustrated catalogue on a phenomenon central to Western art.
